99 HDI 90 not starting. - dappa786
Hi I hope someone can give me some advice on my 406hdi.
My Car suddenly cut out and had to have it trailered away as it would not restart.
It been at the garage a couple of weeks now at a diesel specialist. He still cannot seem to find the fault. He has replaced the glow plugs and crank pully sensor and he says it needs a new ECU and a PS2 ( whatever that is ) and a new key barrel for the ignition at a total cost of over £300.
Im completly at a loss to what i should do . I love the car and it never gave me any prior problems.
I need some advice. Am i being told the right info or am being taken for ride?
Should I cut my losses and get rid of the car.

Any advice appreciated.
Thanks to all in advance.

406 HDI 90 not starting 1999 Estate - Screwloose

The fact that he changed the glow-plugs for a cut-out fault [and on an HDi which doesn't use them for starting] tells me all I need to know about your "specialist."

A new ECU, immobilizer and keys/lock [why?] is well the wrong side of £1000; so that's baloney too.

A few questions for him. What is the primary pressure at key on? What is the rail pressure cranking? What were the results of the individual injector leak-off tests? Are the injectors being fired? Are all the combination relay's outputs correct?

The answers - or the lack of them - will reveal much.....

Thenks screwloose for the prompt reply.

Im not very technically minded but i will pose these questions to him.

The funny thing is i did manage to get my car started agian using ezystart. I filled the tank up to the brim with diesel and too k the car for a 20 mile blast on the motorway to clean things out just in case of bad diesel or something.
Left the car for 2 hours and then it did not start hence me taking it to the diesel "specialist".

It cranks over but does not start not even with ezy start now.

Im completely bewildered. The fuel pump im sure is fine as i can hear it.
