Not surprised by your Volvo's MPG! I've got a 1999 2.0-litre automatic which does around 25MPG knocking around locally (Milton Keynes-quite a traffic-friendly town).
But as soon as I hit the motorway it improves to a steady 35-6MPG. Unfortunately most of my driving now is `knocking around locally.' So I'm a little unhappy with the consumption. On the plus side it's done almost 90,000 miles,(75,000 by me in six years of ownership) is completely reliable and absolutely everything still works as it should. It's never cost a penny in unnecessary repairs but I do change the oil (fully synthetic) and filter at a strict 7,000 mile interval - a compromise between HJ's 5,000-mile regime and Volvo's 10,000 recommendation.
I guess I'm lucky in that my son is a time-served motor engineer though!

Hi Andy, Dad had one of these from new on an R reg and yes, MPG was dreadful from new. IIRC Volvo used a very old Renault engine.
He replaced it with a used 850 2.5, and economy was on a par with the V40. Much nicer car to drive as well.

I had an R reg S40 2 Litre - I can honestly say it was the worst car I ever had. Fuel consumption wasn't too bad - about 28 - 30, but only 500 miles to a litre of oil! Reliability was awful - in the 3 years I had it (lease car), it was back at the dealers every two months (or even more frequent) for yet another problem.
In the first two weeks, it was in my posession for a mere 36 hours! Dealer was also dreadful. I was glad to switch back to Saab. I'll never have a Volvo again.
