2001 1.8LX - New engine problem - Richie_green
Hi

I have had a new engine fitted but the garage fitting it have now said that the engine keeps 'surging' and it may have something to do with the fuel pump.
Can anyone shed any light? Is this likely to cost me even more cash?

need more info on your discription of surging but mostly caused by air leaks!. Was this the one that started off with a rattle from the inlet manifold some time ago? & if so was the manifold replaced or did you drive it till the engine failed?

Yes it is. The engine has been replaced but this has happened with the engine in! The garage have said it starts ticking over fine then surges, and they asked if the car has had any fuel pump problems., which it hasnt

Has it had the possibly faulty inlet manifold replaced? Still need to know more about the surging? surging when driving ? Hot ? Cold ? idling? What does it idle at ? by how much does it fluctuate? has it had an emission test? that should offer most information. Has it had a diagnostic test? Does garage know what they are doing?

Just spoken at length with the garagae - I had my concerns as to there ability but feel slightly happier now.
The new engine has been replaced and is running fine. Starts every time from cold and runs like a treat....until it heats up. Once it heats up, it surges and revs high. Then when driving and coming to a stop its seems to cut out, he said the revs just go.
They did a diagnostic and it came back with something to do with the thermostat - he then said this could be causing the cut off.
Any ideas anyone?
Reason I like to ask on here is there is such a broad range of knowledge......and I am not 100% convinced/understand what the garage is saying.

Hi, not sure if it is relevant, but my son had what seams like a similar probem with his Citroen Saxo. I found that it was the throttle sensor connector. Disconnecting the plug & a few squirts of WD 40 before reconnecting cured the problem.
Could be worth a try?

Throttle sensor is the most likely culprit as Bri says its a common fault with Mondeos I believe a plastic part disintergrates causing the excact symptoms you describe.

Thanks for this - is the thermostat not an issue then as he has said it is reporting an issue on the diagnostic test?

An update - the garage had looked at the throttle sensor and replaced the thermostat heater without any resolution. It has now got to go to a specialist diagnostic. The car is still starting fine but when hot the rev counter goes erratic and cuts out as soon as the clutch is dipped.....oh the joy!
The garage have asked around and even phoned ford but they can't offer anything!!

On these 1.8 engines I believe there is an electronic sensor on the EGR system. Was this reconnected correctly?
Does it rev slightly higher if you dip the clutch at speed? When the ECU knows the speed it adjusts the idle mix (higher revs). Normally though if any sensor is not connected you should get a fault code.
Does it cut out when clutch dipped at idle?
Did the garage actually takes reading from the throttle sensor? Or just check the connections?

I believe they have checked and double checked everything and are at a total loss.
There are no fault codes being reported at all now and a reading was taken and shoed to be fine.

The car doesnt cut out when the clutch is dipped at idle.

This has been going on for over a month now and he has passed it onto a diagnostic specialist, but I fear it could be something very simple!
