I have a three month old C5 with automatic gearbox which is the third auto car I have driven. I find the changing down from 4 to 3 and 3 to 2 very jerky at times as if I was changing down, in manual, to a lower gear than intended.Citroen tell me the car is in standard condition but I find it hard to believe that such a less than smooth change down can be acceptable. I am coping by changing gear manually. Has anybody come up against this one?

Hi,

I've had a C5 Auto for a couple of months.

I have not yet encountered this jerkiness. I might be tempted to ask Citroen what they mean by "standard".

FYI, I think that there have been some adverse comments on a previous thread. Try a search for Citroen C5. I think Mark (Brazil) had some comments.

I often use the "manual" change on mine too...saves fuel by shifting to 4th on hills when going down and seems slow to change to 3rd uphill and often goes straight into 2nd....it doesnt jerk unless setting off immediately after stopping with the shift at manual when it gets a bit confused poor thing!

presumably water pours into the boot if its opened after rain and the suspension rattles at the rear...does yours jump sideways occasionally??

nice to know that citroen still produce individual cars that are ececentric.

Hi,

Yes my C5 does react to sidewinds

Also, after rain the electric wing mirrors go wonky. The passenger side refuses to dip and goes on a bizzarre trip round the world.

Funky. Unlike the dealers who should take a long walk of a short pier. Dont let them grind you down.

Do you have a 1.8 or 2.0 car? (Petrol or Diesel)
I have read on groups.yahoo.com/group/C5-L/ that there is new software for the smaller engined auto gearboxes. Just ask your dealer.

Many thanks for responses. From the advice given I now find that jerky change downs are a known problem and I am not very happy that Citroen London did not see fit to tell me on the four occasions I have been back to them. The back end noise referred to is a another known problem and I believe there is a fix for it, On another matter, my auto headlights come on OK in dull lighting but invariably fail to go off again. As ever Citroen found no fault (the computer) and could only be persuaded that I was not telling porkies when I returned the car with engine running, lights switched off but illuminating. This was a month ago and I am still waiting to hear what they intend to do aboutit. Am not terribly impressed with my first experience of Citroen.

Glad I,m not the only one to be unimpressed by Citroen,s customer care. They told me I should expect noises such as a loud knock every time I change gear "because my car is mass produced". I have never experienced such problems on any other car. I couldn,t be bothered to point out that all cars are mass produced I just hung up at this point in the phone call.

If all these problems are standard and a feature of the car you would have thought that they might have been mentioned in the glossy brochure!!

Thankyou to Bennyboy for the link to what is the most interesting c5 web discussion forum....strongly recommend others to this forum as it has already answered most of my queries and confirmed that I am not alone in thinking that the whole suspension problem is a matter of balls.

Further to auto gearbox problems,I have now been offered a courtesy car so that mine can be taken in for a gearbox software upgrade and testing..If it works ,I will be delighted to come back on with details.

>changing down from 4 to 3 and 3 to 2 very jerky at times

Is there any common factor to these times?
(like, is it kickdown, or slowing rapidly, or putting a bigger load on by slowing down going up steep hill(s)?

Not that I am suggesting answer, but it might (HAH!) help your dealer sort the problem.

The difficulty I am experiencing is that the jerky change down is now intermittent. Initially, it was truly dreadful and without anything being done to it, it is now bad just on occasions. It is clearly a known fault and I live in hope that the forthcoming software upgrade I have been booked in to receive will allow me to join subscribers who are happy with their C5 Auto.
