I've ended Ebay auctions early, and I've not had a visit from the Ebay Police. You are entitled to end the auction early, if God-forbid, the car is no longer in a saleable condition, which could happen if you had a crash, or it was vandalised. I'm sure that's unlikely though....

Thanks for the suggestion, but Wigan is a little out of my way, I'm in Plymouth.
Presumably on ebay I could simply have a buy it now price the same as elsewhere and its disappearance would be a buy it now buyer.

End it early. Cannot see any moral objection at all.

Do you mean ending it early with no bids or ending it early when someone else has bid on it and thinks they are going to win it? No problem at all with the former, but problem with the latter IMHO.
My brother got gazumped on ebay last week but it was only a double bed not a car!
Personally I would either use an eBay auction OR sell it another way, but not both at the same time.
But it seems like nowadays the majority of car listings have that get-out clause on them; I bet ebay dont give a fig as long as the money is pouring in..

So true, they dont.
You can end an auction early and are given an option to leave a reasons why, ie no longer available for sale.
One thing to be wary of selling a motor on ebay is if the eventual winning buyer hasnt already had a good look and/or test drive prior to winning you can bet your bottom dollar they will haggle like hell when they turn up. Also there are too many idiot 'ebayers' who are happy to bid for an item even though they never intend to pay or even contact you afterwards.
You can list using an option where the bidder has to be approved first, so they have to contact you with name, address, home telephone etc before you put them on the approved to bid list.
Isnt a huge amount to try ebay so if you are prepared to possibly lose your £8-10 listing fee it is an option. Plenty of genuine buyers but unfortunately plenty of donks.

the idiot bidder thing is a reason not to have a buy it now. If they buy then the auction ends and you get hit for the fees even if they dont complete - run an auction with a reserve, or have a mate bid to your minimum - everyone else seems to.
|
Shill bidding (a mate bidding on your auction) is illegal, but you are quite right it does happen far too often, one idea is to start the auction at £3000, or better still £2950, cant be bid under this amount but there is still the problem of idiots bidding out of stupidity/spite. The approved bidder thing is great in theory, just a bit fiddly in practice, this is the only way you can be sure that you dont get some idiot bidding in the last 2 seconds, winning, then disappearing. Even this is not foolproof, I have actualy spoken to winning bidders two or three times on the phone and they then have just disappeared.

Illegal? surely not

Well if it isnt it blinkin well should be, it is fraud, if you do the same at an Auction house you can definitely be done.
Mind you Ebay are very slow to act once shilling is reported, allegedly.

You get your Final Value Fees refunded if you complete the Non Paying Bidder process.
See the ebay community boards for more advice and info.

Now advertised on ebay, for those interested:

Wouldn't pay anything near £3k for a Jap import. You can never be sure of it's history over there, and if it came via Dubai there's a good chance of it being very dodgy.

Good to see the same old pub myths being regurgitated again and again.Makes a good scare story.

"I've got a Rover 416i" !! Wonderful. Surely a John McEnroe moment? Goodness, I bet you were tempted. Good luck with the sale. Awesome car.

Yes Papho, I had to summon all my willpower to resist such a tempting offer;-)

Looks lovely - hope you get a good price, although I think £3k is a tad optimistic. Happy to be proved wrong, though.. :-)

I always thought it was unwise to accept paypal for something which the buyer collects in person?

Beautiful looking car. Good luck with the sale.
I would add something along the lines of "timewasters will be reported to Ebay" and "people with less than 100% feedback please contact me first". My dad sold a Transit on Ebay recently, and the first two "buyers" who won the auction didn't bother to contact, show up, or pay. One of them was a serial timewaster who had negative feedback from 6 other sellers (all on cars and vans) who they'd done the same to. Third time was fine, but it adds weeks when you just want a vehicle out of the way. In the end he got more than he was expecting for it, and the transaction, when it eventually happened, was hassle free. Nice bloke, turned up when agreed, handed over the cash, did the paperwork and drove off. Job done!
Looking at it, I'd buy it myself if I could justify it in any way. Lovely looking example.
Cheers

Yes, that is the normal thinking, certainly for cheaper items than this. Suggest check with ebay.co.uk community boards for details and advice.
Personally, I would require a non-refundable 5% paypal deposit within 48 hours of auction closing and the rest in cash on the day. (Although please do note I have not sold a car in this price range before i.e. just the folks' old bangers!)
DP, one can change one's settings so the worst bidders can automatically be blocked from your auction. There is quite a range of action that can be taken in ebay against these time-wasters.

Yeah right. Would you ask for a 5% desposit from somebody before they came to see the car if it were advertised in Autotrader? You could, but I can guess what the answer would be.
Alternatively, Billy Whizz, perhaps you'd like to send my friend from Nigeria £500 by Paypal just in case you ever fancy buying a car from me.
|
err, Mapmaker, have you ever used eBay?

No, thats because an Ebay auction and selling private are different. You are *supposed* to be able to trust the sellers feedback rating and description. But this obviously gets ignored and abused.
I sold a Golf on Ebay; the buyer did not come to look at it before winning it, I received payment in full (£1300) prior to them collecting it. Young lad and his Dad came to collect it (to Nottingham from somewhere near London), I offered them a cup of tea and they declined, just got in it and drove off. Luckily it was very honestly and accurately described.
If it had been any different, and they had started tyre kicking I would have been highly unimpressed. You win the auction, you pay for it, you take it away. Only if it is mis-described is there any cause for re-negotiation (like the alloys I bought that were described as excellent but were quite badly kerbed).

"5% deposit from somebody before they came to see the car"
It's up to them if they don't see the car. I bought my last car through Ebay, and was sufficiently confident in the seller (via email and a couple of phone calls) to risk not making the journey twice. If I'd had any doubts, I'd have viewed first or, more likely, looked elsewhere. All s/h car buying is a risk - you just have to try to minimise it.
