Best Way of Selling a 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four - Marc4Six
I have just put down a deposit on a car and now need to sell my current car, preferably in the next 2 or 3 weeks for reasonable money.

Brief details are:
1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four JDM White in excellent condition inside and out.
98000 Miles, engine rebuilt 8000 Miles ago with forged pistons and steel head gasket.
Full service history with local import specialist since imported in 2003, I am the first private owner in this country.
Seats re-trimmed in leather 2 years ago.
Radio and all speakers replaced with Alpine DVD player and speakers.
No rust.
Only bad points are a few stone chips, one surface scratch, one small door dent and a slightly damaged wheel.

I have considered putting it on ebay and the GT4 owners club website, any other suggestions or advice greatfully received.

One other thing I am looking to get at least £3000, any chance?

I drove one of these when they came out. Cracking cars. Have you put it on our classifieds ?

Not yet, but I will do soon.

I have a busy weekend ahead cleaning inside and out and then photographing it.

I wouldn't count on getting a lot for a car like this, in my limited experience, if it isn't an economical diesel small honda there isn't much of a second hand market any more

Oooh I don't know, there's always a petrol head out there rather than someone that sees cars
as mere white goods.

Well not when I was selling my beautiful mint condition Golf GTi turbo

the best bet would be on ebay and club site. thats the places i would look for a specific car.
i dont know about its value though but try asking on club sites for value.
Best Way of Selling a 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four - moonshine {P}

It seems that ebay is now the place to sell cars that are 'special' or 'different'. Yours sounds like a great example of a cracking car, if I had room for another car i would be tempted to buy it myself, the GT-Four is one of those cars on my 'One day I will own one' list.

If you can find the right buyer, I.e someone actively looking for a GT4, rather than an oppertunist buyer, I think you might get close to the £3k mark for it.

Good luck and I hope it goes to a good home!

Try pitching it as a classic in one of the specialist mags such as Practical Classics, think you'll be struggling to get 3k though.

Thanks for all the useful suggestions.

An ebay related question occurs to me, ending an auction early is prohibited by ebay's terms and conditions, therefore it seems not to be legitimate to advertise the car elsewhere, although many clearly do. What are Backroomers view of this?

......ending an auction early is prohibited by ebay's terms and conditions......

If it doesn´t meet the reserve, which you can set at 3k, what´s the problem?

eBay are unlikely to hound you to the high courts if you end your auction early. You can just give as a reason ´item no longer available´. I did this myself when selling the hardtop off the Barchetta - local guy turned up offering plenty of cash, job done.

If you are not too far from Wigan (or don't mind taking the train back) then Wigan Sports and Prestige might be interested as it is the kind of interesting car that they would buy.

Best Way of Selling a 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four - oldnotbold
I've ended Ebay auctions early, and I've not had a visit from the Ebay Police. You are entitled to end the auction early, if God-forbid, the car is no longer in a saleable condition, which could happen if you had a crash, or it was vandalised. I'm sure that's unlikely though....
Best Way of Selling a 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four - Marc4Six
Thanks for the suggestion, but Wigan is a little out of my way, I'm in Plymouth.

Presumably on ebay I could simply have a buy it now price the same as elsewhere and its disappearance would be a buy it now buyer.
Best Way of Selling a 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four - Mapmaker
End it early. Cannot see any moral objection at all.

End it early. Cannot see any moral objection at all.

Do you mean ending it early with no bids or ending it early when someone else has bid on it and thinks they are going to win it? No problem at all with the former, but problem with the latter IMHO.

My brother got gazumped on ebay last week but it was only a double bed not a car!

Personally I would either use an eBay auction OR sell it another way, but not both at the same time.
But it seems like nowadays the majority of car listings have that get-out clause on them; I bet ebay dont give a fig as long as the money is pouring in..

So true, they dont.

You can end an auction early and are given an option to leave a reasons why, ie no longer available for sale.
One thing to be wary of selling a motor on ebay is if the eventual winning buyer hasnt already had a good look and/or test drive prior to winning you can bet your bottom dollar they will haggle like hell when they turn up. Also there are too many idiot 'ebayers' who are happy to bid for an item even though they never intend to pay or even contact you afterwards.
You can list using an option where the bidder has to be approved first, so they have to contact you with name, address, home telephone etc before you put them on the approved to bid list.
Isnt a huge amount to try ebay so if you are prepared to possibly lose your £8-10 listing fee it is an option. Plenty of genuine buyers but unfortunately plenty of donks.
Cheers

the idiot bidder thing is a reason not to have a buy it now. If they buy then the auction ends and you get hit for the fees even if they dont complete - run an auction with a reserve, or have a mate bid to your minimum - everyone else seems to.
Best Way of Selling a 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four - corblimeyguvnar
Shill bidding (a mate bidding on your auction) is illegal, but you are quite right it does happen far too often, one idea is to start the auction at £3000, or better still £2950, cant be bid under this amount but there is still the problem of idiots bidding out of stupidity/spite. The approved bidder thing is great in theory, just a bit fiddly in practice, this is the only way you can be sure that you dont get some idiot bidding in the last 2 seconds, winning, then disappearing. Even this is not foolproof, I have actualy spoken to winning bidders two or three times on the phone and they then have just disappeared.

Well if it isnt it blinkin well should be, it is fraud, if you do the same at an Auction house you can definitely be done.
Mind you Ebay are very slow to act once shilling is reported, allegedly.

You get your Final Value Fees refunded if you complete the Non Paying Bidder process.

Wouldn't pay anything near £3k for a Jap import. You can never be sure of it's history over there, and if it came via Dubai there's a good chance of it being very dodgy.

I always thought it was unwise to accept paypal for something which the buyer collects in person?
Best Way of Selling a 1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four - DP
Beautiful looking car. Good luck with the sale.

I would add something along the lines of "timewasters will be reported to Ebay" and "people with less than 100% feedback please contact me first". My dad sold a Transit on Ebay recently, and the first two "buyers" who won the auction didn't bother to contact, show up, or pay. One of them was a serial timewaster who had negative feedback from 6 other sellers (all on cars and vans) who they'd done the same to. Third time was fine, but it adds weeks when you just want a vehicle out of the way. In the end he got more than he was expecting for it, and the transaction, when it eventually happened, was hassle free. Nice bloke, turned up when agreed, handed over the cash, did the paperwork and drove off. Job done!

Looking at it, I'd buy it myself if I could justify it in any way. Lovely looking example.

Cheers

Yes, that is the normal thinking, certainly for cheaper items than this. Suggest check with ebay.co.uk community boards for details and advice.

Personally, I would require a non-refundable 5% paypal deposit within 48 hours of auction closing and the rest in cash on the day. (Although please do note I have not sold a car in this price range before i.e. just the folks' old bangers!)

DP, one can change one's settings so the worst bidders can automatically be blocked from your auction. There is quite a range of action that can be taken in ebay against these time-wasters.

Yeah right. Would you ask for a 5% desposit from somebody before they came to see the car if it were advertised in Autotrader? You could, but I can guess what the answer would be.

Alternatively, Billy Whizz, perhaps you'd like to send my friend from Nigeria £500 by Paypal just in case you ever fancy buying a car from me.

No, thats because an Ebay auction and selling private are different. You are *supposed* to be able to trust the sellers feedback rating and description. But this obviously gets ignored and abused.

I sold a Golf on Ebay; the buyer did not come to look at it before winning it, I received payment in full (£1300) prior to them collecting it. Young lad and his Dad came to collect it (to Nottingham from somewhere near London), I offered them a cup of tea and they declined, just got in it and drove off. Luckily it was very honestly and accurately described.

If it had been any different, and they had started tyre kicking I would have been highly unimpressed. You win the auction, you pay for it, you take it away. Only if it is mis-described is there any cause for re-negotiation (like the alloys I bought that were described as excellent but were quite badly kerbed).

"5% deposit from somebody before they came to see the car"

It's up to them if they don't see the car. I bought my last car through Ebay, and was sufficiently confident in the seller (via email and a couple of phone calls) to risk not making the journey twice. If I'd had any doubts, I'd have viewed first or, more likely, looked elsewhere. All s/h car buying is a risk - you just have to try to minimise it.

Nice looking car. Probably the best celica (handling wise)? as the later model although quick, were reported to be a little boring if efficient.

Update

Buyer calls day after auction to ask a few questions the insurance company have put and suggest that next weekend they will travel down (from Peterborough) by train to pick up, car is clearly a present for girlfriend.

Monday after auction, buyer calls to ask if Thursday is okay to pick up car (now coming from Reading). I have no problem with that and agree to pick them up from station.

Thursday, pick up couple from the station, it is immediately obvious they are taken by the appearance of the car and even more taken by the engine note (definitely worth leaving window open to better appreciate sound).

Buyer very happy with condition of car, has to have a few flaws, mentioned on ebay pointed out, they really are minor, checks receipts for work done, MOTs etc all in order. Pays in cash, V5 completed, transaction complete leaves with car very happy:-)

Money now in bank, a perfect deal and very pleasant, now looking forward to picking up my replacement car on Saturday!

Nice one.

I've got to say I was deeply sceptical of Fleabay as a place for cars but having sold two it's been really striaghtforward and your ad was a good example of where it does well - if you know you're stuff as buyer or seller you can weed out the trash from those little nuances of the wording and how much of the warts and all the seller is prepared to share.
