When starting first thing in the morning, the engine never fires up first time - it splutters quite a bit, sometimes 2 or 3 attemps are needed to start causing a lot af smoke to come out of exhaust. Once started car is fine unless left for some hours then same problem. I've replaced the glow plugs and battery, had the fuel filter seal checked out - was ok. Replaced air flow meter and waste gate due to other problem.
Was told could be relay to glow plugs?

perhaps if you checked voltage at glowplugs when ignition is turned on when cold would verify if relay is working.

You should get the diagnostics read when cold to establish what the temp sensor is saying. It could well be that the ECU thinks the engine in warm/hot when it is not Regards Peter

Seven different TDi's used in '99 - what's the 3-letter engine code?
