This applies to a new Land Rover Defender 110 I'm waiting for, but I guess the same would apply to virtually any new car.

When I placed the order, it was suggested by the dealer I might like to wait a bit and have a 'new' new registration of 1st March. As it was by no means clear then when the vehicle might really arrive I saw it it my interest to push for sooner, rather than later.

At the moment, we are looking at an earliest deliverable date of 25th February. Much to my surprise the dealer now thinks this good, and not to wait a few days for 1st March and a number with an 8 in it. I guess sales targets are the dealers issue as the extra 1 week tax would be covered by them at no cost to me (I have this in writing).

Pro's of this, the above, and the fact I don't have to renew the tax on the trade in. Dealer does not seem willing to let me walk off with the tax disc which although I'd only drive the old car a dozen miles on the 1st, the act of signing the V5c, the no tax and or SORN would probably make me an easy nick for Swansea. So all in all it is cheaper.

Con's, well I'd never played the 'new' new registration game, and truthfully, not really my style. But less than a week? Given the date of build won't change, the date of first registration does come into play. Trade in wise, a dealer would pay you less, but the forecourt price would not change that much.

In all this, I tend to keep cars a long time. The existing one will be nearly 8 years old, and I think it very likely I'll keep this one even longer. I'm aware I get stung on VED, but I'm hoping it's not priced off the road. Purchase of another 8 years down the line though is probably going to be only for the very rich. So trade in is probably not that big an argument.

So, what do the readers think? Dealer has been told that I'm not deciding now as it's to soon (car not built yet etc), but obviously I will have to be ready to give an answer.

You could have delivered to your home unregistered and register it after 1st March if you wanted.

Depends how long you plan to keep it. In five years the difference in value between a Feb '08 57-plate and Mar '08 08-plate will only be very small. In ten years even less.

Enjoy it by the way. Ford has left an excellent legacy with the latest version, all the virtues of the car's history (and a few of the vices) with a 21 st century engine. Had borrow of one for a while !

Check that you get the same deal for March delivery rather than February. I got my Golf on 20 August as they'd have given me less for my PX if I'd waited till September. I;'m sure that monthly quotas had something to do with it but I don't think it'll be worth much less the other end than if it had been a 57.

AFAIK most brands operate on quarterly targets; that being the case the dealer should be indifferent whether the vehicle is registered in February or March. However,I'd guess that the last week of Feb will be pretty quiet in most dealers, so you should get a far better service than the following week, both from the salesman and hopefully the PDI.

If you're planning on keeping it 8 years plus then I'd agree the imapct on residuals would be minimal, so go with what feels best for you...

I'm in a similar quandry, having ordered a car in September last year; delivery was expected late December, and the dealer actually suggested waiting until January to register it. However the car is now late, and not expected until the first week of February... I'm taking its when its ready, but should I wait for 3 weeks... I can't really be bothered !!

Thanks so far, Pugugly has given me an idea if end of February sales targets are an issue as the extra money they are prepared to spend would cover either lending me trade plates for a few hours or carting me and new vehicle back on the 29th and me waiting a few hours before I can use it.

As for the driving of it, yes. I had a test drive in a new 90 (but have driven 110s before) and it has become a much more car and less agricultural driving experience. Vastly improved gear change and a much more responsive engine. I guess it took Ford to say, "look you really can't make gearboxes, so stop pretending".

Order for mine was placed at the beginning of November. It turns out few Counties are made with ABS and although it's not perfect, having had it on the 90, I most certainly want to keep it. The by-product of traction control works too, although you have to adopt a different driving style to make the best of it.

The driving position is still the worse in the world....

Couldn't agree more PU. I had an early 90 County ( 3.5 V8 heh heh ! )
Gave me a bad back...........but the sound.........oh yeah !

Where i work to let the customer have this choice, they simply pay for the car say on the 27th of Feb so the deal can go into the february figures. But then deliver/handover/register of the vehicle takes place in march. Infact there have been two customers so far that have paid out in January but are taking the cars in march (It is Aston Martin though) But dont think that makes a difference? Or will it if its volume?

Personally, i'd wait...

As I understand it (and I've had at least one car taxed like this) a brand new car can be taxed, and driven, up to a week before the beginning of the month. You just pay for an extra week's tax.

Quite true, you can have 12 months 1 week tax on a new car. And the dealer has said they'll fund the extra week. But with a March registration, the registration number would have an 8 in it, hence my question.

Useful to see a variety of opinions. I don't post that much but read a fair amount.
