FYI:
www.theaa.com/public_affairs/news/20mph-roads-emis...l
From that document:
Steady 30mph (4th gear):
60.7 mpg (small petrol car), 55.6 mpg (medium petrol car)
= 58.15 mpg (average)
Steady 20mph (3rd gear):
55.5 mpg (small petrol car), 49.1 mpg (medium petrol car)
= 52.3 mpg (average)
Speed humps (6 over 1/2 mile at 20-30 mph):
33.8 mpg (small petrol car), 27.9 mpg (medium petrol car)
= 30.85 mpg (average)
Very interesting figures re. fuel consumption & gears.

Did anyone ever think they were good for the environment? They are there in as an attempt to reduce average speeds.

In areas where the lower limit was needed but constantly ignored - hence the AA's recomnedation that average speed cameras are better than humps.....

I'm no fan of cameras by any means, but it is striking (at least round these parts) the extent to which people now behave in roadworks, where previously if you were going at the speed limit you were in a distinct minority.
