97 220SD, automatic tensioner for auxiliary belt - biggrin
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to change the automatic tensioner with the engine in situ?
The Haynes manual does not cover the actual part.
The whole thing has come out of it's housing and has a very strong spring, I'm not sure if it can be done at all, as I have no idea how it is secured. At the moment it is jammed between the casing and the inner wing. If anyone can tell me what the job would entail it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you Biggrin

It is possible to change. I think it is held on with a 14mm double hex bolt. The tensioner has broke into 2 pieces, common fault. You need to try to get it out from its jammed position (be careful there may still be tension in that spring) then unbolt the rest of the tensioner. If you get a new tensioner you'll see how it fits, it has a locating part that only fits one way.
