(99-04)2.2 petrol - ABS problem (UK car in Malawi) - Malawi Dave
We have a car here in Africa that a customer imported from UK so different to our normal specs. however the brakes are giving a typical ABS pulsing sensation when braking at slow speeds (Brake and clutch together type speeds) and there is a significant grating noise as the vehicle stops. We cannot see any signs of grinding on discs etc and have already replaced ABS wheel sensors, ABS ECU and ABS unit plus replaced the servo (Which on this model is on LHS of bulkhead). The car had a minor accident some months ago but all seems aligned OK. We cannot u/stand why the ABS unit pulses at such slow braking speeds on ordinary roads.

One of your wheel-speed sensors is losing signal from it's reluctor ring under braking and the ECU thinks that wheel has locked.

Get it plugged-in and watch the four wheel-speeds as it slows; one will vary from the rest.

A good clean and check of that sensor and it's reluctor ring [for looseness and cracks] and the wheel bearing play should show the problem.

has it got 4 matching tyres sizes & makes? I have had some makes of tyre that are the same size vary by over 2"! Causing ABS problems, also check the ABS reluctor rings for a hairline crack. I really do mean hairline as this will also cause the symptoms you discribe.

Hi, Thanks for the info! When you say "get it plugged in" do you mean some sort of diagnostic kit?

Yes; professional kit - i.e. not from e-bay.....

Most garages can do/arrange this now.
