Two years ago I had a Grand Cherokee from Alamo booked via a UK travel agent, picked it up in downtown Boston after a few days in the city, dropped it back at Logan about eight days later, had full extra everything platinum go-large cover, I remember it seemed very good value though I cant remember the actual costs.
EDIT:

If you go-large on the cover they just dont care about minor scrapes, in effect you are paying them to take responsibility. The Jeep had a small scrape on the rear bumper, I had it noted on pick up though on drop off they didn't care, they simply said I have paid "go-large" so they just repair anything that needs it. Doesnt apply in an RTA of course where you are fully insured though are accountable.

I've had a quote from Dollar through travelsupermarket.com for a Grand Cherokee for the 4 days for £138 all in, including a tank of fuel and all damage waivers etc.
Looks like we'll be getting two of those. It seems just too expensive to get something big enough for 7 people plus luggage - although Budget would supply a 12 seater bus with a V8(!) for around £400.

Just checked my records:
It was Dollar and not Alamo that we got the Grand Cherokee from, the go-large insurance package was called Platinum. We picked it up at the Marriot in the city and dropped it back at Logan, a booster seat was thrown in at no charge.
I have mentioned on another thread how the sat nav gave us a bum steer heading back to Logan, it took us to the airport admin offices, so if you want to reply on sat nav make sure you select Departures.
EDIT: Car hire cost £192 for 7 days, so about $380.

Thanks for that - it looks like Dollar then, but whether 2 cars are better than 1 minivan I still don't know.....

Besides the normal shop around for the best deal etc whatever you get check the bodywork thoroughly for any damage however small and make sure any defects are noted so you have no chance of being done.
I second that. When I return a rental I take pictures of the entire car with my other half holding that day's newspaper in the shot. One time I got a letter from the rental company a few months later asking if I knew about any damage. I told them no and offered to send them the pictures to prove it and not surprisingly didn't hear anything else.
The rental industry here is very competitive so they offer low sounding rates but then they make it up with fees and charges for "damage".
