Can anyone recommend any of the above please? I would like to get a so called 'sealed for life' box serviced with oil and filter change.

As I'm sure many know, Audi main dealers will not touch these unless something has gone wrong (which it hasn't..) and so I'd rather use a specialist.

THanks all.

If in north mids you could try VMTP in Norton Canes, have used them for a couple of ATF oil/filter changes - no personal connection to me just a satisfied customer. Not sure if your transmission uses Esso LT71141 fluid but they were able to supply it for me. Cost was pretty reasonable, about £125 or so for parts/labour/VAT on a tiptronic ZF box in a passat. They've got a pretty decent website.

Just a stones throw from the excellent independant garage Midland VW who are at 21 Conduit Road in Norton Canes, Cannock.

Midland sevice all VAG cars and I have found them to be very good at what they do and reasonably priced as well.

Again no connection other than as a very satisfied customer.

As always

Can you be more specific about which part of the Midlands area you would prefer?

Also other than changing the ATF and filter can you actually 'service' a sealed for life autobox?

Thanks all -- really appreciated, and recommendations from satisfied customers is exactly what I'm after. I'm based just outside Bromsgrove so Wolverhampton etc not too far by any means.

A bit of a development, feel free to comment.... I have read many horror stories of these sealed for life ZF boxes (as fitted to Audi, Mercs, Jag S types & BMWs of the '90as and early 2000s) failing any time from around 80000 miles, Many people therefore recommend they are opened up, flushed and refilled with a new filter. However, some experts (one I spoke to today who is a member of FATE the auto box professional body) said on now account should they be touched unless there is something specifically wrong or the oil has become contaminated.
To my mind, an oil and filter change around £120 is safer than waiting for it to blow in the future and face a £2000 - £3000 rebuild or replacement bill. Swings and roundabluts really... not yet made up my mind for certain.

At present, shifts are fine -- mostly imperceptible and well timed. The tiptronic function works as it should. Sometimes when in D changes from 1st to 2nd are a little snatchy, but that's all. I'll continue to ponder.

Any more thoughts are welcome. THanks again.

Not convinced by "sealed for life" on an auto box, more like "sealed for period of warranty" as far as the manufacturer is concerned. My Passat (1999 on a V-plate) did more than 140,000 miles before its first gearbox service without a problem but now that I know how cheap it is to get serviced it's a no-brainer every 30,000 or so miles. My plan is to keep the car until 250,000-odd miles in a few years so I'd consider it good insurance to have the gearbox serviced regularly.

I'd have no hesitation in entrusting your auotbox to a specialist to service, as you say £120 now or a very possible £2-3K later on......if something goes wrong!

Autoboxes that aren't sealed for life are easy to service - drain the fluid (or about half of it in practice), refit drain plug and re-fill through the dipstick.

Sealed-for-life autoboxes however have no means of drain or refill without partial dismantling - which needs to be done in a clinically clean environment, so a specialist would seem necessary in this case.
