If you don't have the original tool you can make one. You will need an all metal coathanger.

Chop the bottom corners off so that you have two pieces with two 4 inch ends, sort of like you finger and thumb.

Straighten out the ends so that they are parallel. Now use these to insert into the four holes in the stereo front (one in each side). These should release the catches and allow you to pull the stereo out. You might need to adjust them slightly (make then closer or further apart) so that they release, but it shouldn't be too difficult. The only other issue is whether you need to remove the cage. These are metal cases which fit into the hole and have tabs which are pressed out to prevent the whole thing from being pulled out and which the catches go into.
You will need either very strong fingers or a small screwdriver to pull the tabs back into a flat position so you can remove the cage.

Good luck.

When you do manage to get the thing out (I seem to remember when I last did this, I used nails!), take careful note of the wiring. I think I'm right in thinking that Vauxhall, for some unfathomable reason, have switched the permanent and main power leads around from the standard DIN wiring. You'll find out when you connect it up.

Buy the proper tools. They are very cheap from any backstreet car parts shop. You will also need a 2mm allen key I think.

If you haven't got them for your new stereo I would buy the appropriate ISO leads as they make the job a lot better and easier. These are the ones that should plug straight into the original Vauxhall wiring loom and straight into the back of your new stereo so you haven't got to spend hours modifying wiring and connectors.

I agree. Most kits available from Halfords, or car accessory shops that ofer a wide range ICE (In Car Entertainment) You'll also need an adapter lead for the car arial plug as well. I got one of those from a Vauxhall main dealer as Halfords didn't have one.

Hi..im trying to install a cd player in my astra but it doesnt seem to be working..could you explain to me this change in wiring?

The wiring that Vauxhall use doesn't comply exactly with the ISO standard - some of the power connections are different. What you need is a harness adapter which fits between the CD player and the car's wiring so the leads join up properly. You can get them from Halfords for around a tenner.

Ahh ha! I am not too sure about the older Vauxhall cars but the new ones have black grub screws in the holes that you insert your bent coat hanger style removal tool, take these out using a small allen key, then remove as per any other head unit. It took me ages to work this out as I was trying to get mine out on a dark winters afternoon and could not understand why the wire would not go into the holes. Nice attempt to thwart the scabby theif, but I bet they can get them out with a decent tug as they are not going to be concerned if they damage your trim!!

Just leave your car unlocked and, depending where you live, a gang of vile spotty scumbags will remove it for you with no charge! Workmanship may not be up to much though!
