Guru's

My car knowledge inept son believed the only thing you had to put into an engine was petrol, Therefore the lack of any form of lubricant (and coolant) has resulted in crank damage..

It is currently a 1.4 Zetec-S, a breakers locally has the 1.25 version. My question, would you know if the 1.25 will drop straight in? Would the 1.4 gearbox/ecu etc be suitable?

Many thanks,

Stuart.

In a word - no.

Although they are similar; with engine swaps, the devil is in the detail. You'd be walking into a nightmare.

Screwloose, I don't doubt your knowledge, I'm just curious.

I had a flick through the Haynes manual last night, and could find no differences between 1.25 and 1.4 in terms of physical fit, transmission or the location of any of the engine management componentry. Apart from a 2" sticker on the cam cover, the two engines look absolutely identical from the outside.

I guess it must be fuelling and engine management related (sensor values, injector flow and the like) which as you say would be an absolute nightmare, but I wonder how many have started down this route and failed. I wonder if anyone has ever succeeded?

I can see why the op was considering this in any case.

Cheers

the original post does say the ecu for the 1.25 is available too. Why is an engine swap such a nightmare these days if the doner car's ecu is used? ( The last engine swap I did was fitting a 1.6 ohc into a mk2 escort estate)

Things that look the same are the most dangerous. A quick flick through a parts disc shows all the detail changes in the life-cycle of even the correct engine. With a different size....?

The fuelling would be the killer. I have tried mis-matched fuelling components in the past that seemed to work OK-ish - until the MIL comes on with long-term fuel trim codes.

The ECUs are coded, so changing them is more grief. Anything is possible given enough time and money - but spending the time finding the right engine is the better option than, possibly insuperable, problems afterwards.

Screwloose,

Yes, I see now. Sounds like hell on earth!
