A parked Auto was pushed forward a couple of feet when driven into by a car. The auto was in 'P'.
What is the likelihood of considerable damage?

Does "park" still hold the car; uphill and down?
|
'park' drops a detent onto the shaft which locates into a keyway - it's a fairly solid device so should be ok but then again how hard was the hit? a bump? fine; back bumper up against the front seats? maybe not so fine...
|
If P still works then you should be OK. Might have strained a few bits though.....

Car was parked in garage, door shut, when hit by a runaway car (no driver) that came from up the hill. Car shunted forwards a couple of feet into shelves at back of garage. You couldn't write this stuff...!

Wheels may have slid and not turned.

What's the garage floor made of and how dusty was it?
Aren't the other car's insurers going to write it off? It must have sustained a fair bit of damage, in many places. Given the costs involved.....

normd2 mentions a detent. I've heard the noise that an auto makes when it's put into park when moving. I'ts a VERY loud ratcheting noise - maybe a heavily sprung detent ?
In this case, no damage was done and everything worked perfectly afterwards.
|
in reply to NONE i think the loud ratcheting noise he heard was a stickshaker type safety device to warn you you're trying to do something silly. imagine what would happen if you popped it into park whilst doing 70 down the M6!

Concrete, and dusty but not gritty, although I haven't seen it..
I'm guessing that it will be written off, but again, I haven't seen the car.

I once put my Plymouth into Park while it was still moving, quite slowly. There was a loud clang, jerk and chirp from the locked rear wheels. No harm was done, but I took care not to do it again. The Audi of course will have been fwd, with more complex and probably fragile driveline. But I agree with Aprilia: if everything still works, should be all right although no good will have been done. Look for new backlash in the transmission.

I managed to get a C3 into reverse while still going forward;locked the back wheels but did no harm to anything.
|
Locked the back wheels. That was clever as it is a front wheel drive car. Regards Peter

He was in reverse, so I suppose they were the back wheels at the time :-)

I read on a US forum a man with a VW (can't remember model) jacked up the front and tried to remove a nut either wheel bolt or hub nut or something while in P and there was a crack sound and it it had broken the peg that locks it. So maybe they can snap quite easily.

Was this the same American who tried to loosen his wheel nuts with a shotgun?
