Buying LHD cars - GeorgeG5
Does anybody know the best places to buy Left Hand Drive cars please?

Are they cheaper/better in the UK or would France/Germany/Belgium be better.

I am looking for a car to use in Poland hwere my wife has connections and car hire is expensive a late Mark2 or early Mark3 Mondeo estate would be the sort of thing I would be looking for but would consider something like an Espace.

Also my neighbour is looking for two cars of about £1K each to send to her brother in Georgia (the country not the State) by container as cars there are apparently very expensive (they are currently just about cut off by Russia and we've all seen the political probs there). Apparently Honda are well thought of there.

In both cases tough cars would be best given road conditions.

All advice gratefully received.

There is a specialist dealer selling LHD cars somewhere in the South-East, near Basingstoke I think. It might turn up in a Forum or Google search

Thanks AS. Looked them up and they do exist but most of the cars there are to suit a higher budget than I or my neighbour.

Keep your eye on Ebay.co.uk - they come up on there.

The Dutch don't use Ebay much - use www.veilingkijker.nl/ to search all their advertising sites in one. I understand that cars in France and Germany are more expensive than in the UK, age for age. The TUV (Germany) is much tougher than the MoT I believe, so there's no such thing as the £500 Primera/Mondeo with 12 months MoT.

There are 2 websites in Germany that are worth looking at for used cars:

www.autoscout24.de

www.mobile.de

My feeling is that used cars here are more expensive than the UK. There is a big market in exporting cars to eastern Europe at the moment which basically puts a floor under used prices and anything under 1000 Euros is probably either unroadworthy or has already done a zillion kilometers. Even dodgy versions of popular models such as E46 BMWs will get snapped up by export dealers and either broken for parts, which can be quite scarce in some eastern european countries, or done up and sold to some unfortunate new owner.

You cannot export a car(officially) from Germany without a current TuV test;it could be exported as scrap but the authorities make sure it is scrap-either crushed or all glass broken-all panels hammered.

Well I don't know how it works but where I live, in Munich, the local papers are full of small ads from dealers looking for cars to buy for export and they will, according to their ads, buy any vehicle, even accident damaged or without TÜV.

There's a dealership in Chesham that specialises in LHD. I forget its name, but worth a google.

Peanut.

Thanks all for your help and websites.

from what has been said Germany is pretty much as I expected, pricey, due to the exports East, but does anybody know about Belgium, I know new car prices are low there and I thought used ones might be too.

Thanks, George

You can get a similar effect by leaving your car in Slough overnight

; o )

I have seen LHD cars on ebay quite often aimed at people with holiday homes or as the OP suggested for frequent visitors to a country.

Just a thought, if you are exporting a £1k car you need to ensure that the MOT requirements of that country wont render it unroadworthy according to their pass criteria.

Dont imagine you would have that problem in Poland though.

Don't be so sure, their MOT is fairly tough, I've had my car through it. I think I've posted this before, mine went on a production line jobbie, better than anything I've seen in the UK, they pay a lot of attention to VIN numbers and paper work, they laser-test the wheel alignment and they weigh it too.
