Diesel fuel additives? - injection doc
Hi A.j
Comma diesel magic is quite good. One bottle in a full tank & just run untill tank down to a quarter before refilling.

Check your handbook. Some manufacturers strongly advise against diesel fuel additives. IIRC some Euro 3 and all Euro 4 engines must not have additives 'added' to the fuel. There have been many posts about fuel additives and very few, if any, proofs that they actually have any benefit. I'm afraid that the phrase 'snake oil' springs to my mind although I'm sure there will be lots of disagreement. Anyway, isn't diesel fuel expensive enough without adding to the cost?
Diesel fuel additives? - too complex
Hi all,
I last visited this site properly back in 03 which led to the purchase of a new nissan x-trail without even a test drive on Honest Johns decent recommendation! Car has been pretty good, nice to live with but dealers not so good.

It so happens our xtrail was very sootty when pulling away a real black cloud!! asked my local garage to look didn't do anything!! I tried redex for diesels and almost instantly cleared the smoke and makes for a much smother drive. I also put some in my toyota van and fuel economy has improved in that. We tend to use local texaco filling stations (non supermarket stations) I am not sure if it needs treatment for every fill up yet but this could add up on running costs.
We are also suffering from a recurring alarm / electrical problem( main dealer was poor here. They said replaced unit at last warranty service at just 3 years old despite putting it into garage at less than 1 year old -then they didnt know fault, all they did was disconnect the siren without telling us!!) after an 18 month lull car now locks the doors repeatedly, seems to be set off by vibration/ pushing the cigar lighter / front dash trim under glove box or just vibration. This is not good as you can lock yourself out with engine running!!The alarm goes off repeatedly for about 4 times after locking car so needs specialist help soon!.

I'm beginning to look for another car but it wont be a nissan as dealers are from experience POOR. I get the impression the mechanics maybe too young / inexperienced or just aren't bothered.
The more I read this and other forums the more difficult it is to choose a car as the trend seems to be if you have a problem your on your own even with warranty.
With the amazing prices charged for items like fuel pumps turbos etc you read of on this site are cars just getting too technical. I am pondering on a kia with a seven year warranty, thats now less appealing if the dealer cant fix it! along with seemingly lower residual values.
Anyone know of a good car similar to xtrail size(family car and very occasional caravan!) that shouldnt go wrong and has "good" support as in my search its even the car companies that wont help.
Yes I would like a lexus but cant stretch to £30k for a car, maybe second hand but what would repair bills be for it!

Subaru Outback - ticks most of the boxes and attractive prices for 1-2 year old low-mileage examples more than compensate for the extra fuel cost.

I've also got an xtrail - 18 month old petrol auto - after the first service it didn't seem to go as well after the service as it had before - at the service they put in a fuel additive, not asked for, as the car was going very well apart from only 25 MPG fuel consumption - anyway it made me wonder, could if they had put in diesel additive in the petrol car have caused the drop off in performance and could the wrong additive cause permanant damage? - I like the car a lot but the dealers I have had contact with are rubbish - I dread having to take it to the dealers for the warranty servicing - puts one off buying a new car.
