Transferring a personal reg - Franco50
I am think about changing my car and I will have a personal reg number to be transferred. As this will be the first time I've changed cars since buying the number I'm not 100% sure what needs to be done to carry this out. I believe it should be put on retention before I buy the other car - is that right? Presumably that involves being issued with a suitable replacement reg number to match the car's age - how does that work? Is it re-issued with the number it originally had when I bought it or is a number issued from a 'pool' of unused numbers? Is this is done by a local taxation office or can the whole process be done online or via post? One last question - if I am buying from a dealer (probably will be) do I just ask them to do the whole thing for me?

I've done this a few times and the first step is to get your existing number plate onto a retention certificate. This is done by applying on the relevant form to your nearest DVLA office and costs £105. You have to enclose various documents eg the MOT and you get all these back but with your cars original number on. Change the number plates, put the reissued tax disc on it and wait - you will get a new V5 through the post. Sell your car as per normal. For your new car - buy it, wait for the V5 to come in your name then send it off to the DVLA with your retention certificate. No money changes here as the £80 admin fee was included in the £105 you paid to get the retention. When the new V5 comes, change the number plates and tax disc and start all over again!!!

Do the whole thing yourself - if the dealer cocks it up you could lose the number plate altogether.
