House price vs car price - movilogo
UK currently has appx 30 million cars and 26 million houses.

The car price drops the moment you're driving out of forecourt.
Yet, house price keeps on rising (inspite of crash talks nowadays)

I've seen many people living in £250k houses and riding a £500 banger.
They think of their children's future and thus invest on houses.
Yet, driving a 15-yr old banger on motorways at 90 mph is even more dangerous for their children!

Why there is so much public apathy towards cars?

To many people they are just domestic appliances. Do you get your fridge or toaster serviced?

1) why is a 15 year old car automatically a banger?
2) why is a 15 year old car automatically dangerous to my children?

I just wanted to say modern cars are usually safer than older cars.

Well I live in a 350K house and drive a 1K car, so that's close ;-)

I'd much rather be doing 90 on a motorway in a 12 year old 'banger' Omega than a modern 'supermini'.
Why there is so much public apathy towards cars?

They wear out quickly, at least compared with houses. You can't live in them ( OK so I did live in a car for a week once, wouldn't recommend it)

>I've seen many people living in £250k houses and riding a £500 banger.

I've seen people live in £2m house who drive a £1,000 LR series II. They are a) asset rich, but little cash and b) have no need to impress the neighbours/keep up with the Jones'.

With the financial markets as they are I predict a few more people finding bangernomics as an attractive option to consumerism. 60p/litre fuel for an old diesel is a lot more tolerable than £1.05/litre, as well.

hmmm, just realised this discussion doesn't apply to me anyway, one car is 14, the other's 17 and I'd probably only get £200K for the house anyway...

I'm sure that websites like this and millions of others, together with the dozens of magazines every month wouldn't exist if there was public apathy towards cars.

In fact it's the enthusiasm and interest that makes people play the system to their own advantage, whether that's buying a car that's a year old, 5 years old or 15 years old.

And that's complete rubbish about old cars being dangerous. Crashing is dangerous. I recommend you don't do it, it'll be much safer than a couple of airbags or 15 years of advanced car design.

In fact the post is so flawed I can't help thinking it's a troll effort

I vote troll as well.

I would say that the people in big houses that drive bangers can afford the big house becuase they drive a banger.

These days a 15 year old car isn't a banger. My Audi is 8 years old, drives like new and has air bags everywhere, ABS etc. I can't see that a new car would have much improvement.

Anyway, my take on safety is that you don't crash in the first place.

I forgot to say that I also drive a 23 year old car as well.

Don't forget that with houses there is a limit on the supply.

And you're buying something that will have an intrinsic value after you're gone. Plus you're paying for the land.

You'd struggle to compare houses and cars in a meaningful way, apart from the marketing of them.

Excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain what a 'troll effort' is please?

Thanks

We've just bought a 1/2million house - my Omega will be 10 years old next week. Mrs V's Mx5 isn't new anymore - it's 4 1/2!!

The couple next door have an new Nissan Note & new & new Movano.

The couple the other side are proud owners of a Mini. That's a Mini, not a MINI!!

Point proven then

£500k house and 2 £500 motors ;-)

btw £250k = average UK house price, BMW 3 = average UK car (ish)

don't get this thread at all, anyone want to swap their new build flat in Leeds for an RS8 btw?

How times change. It's not many years since I was thinking it bizarre that someone living in a £30,000 house near me would own a £30,000 car.

This was when that amount would buy you a smallish flat or a terraced house if you weren't excessively choosy about the location.

At a guess, it would be more than five years ago but less than ten. Since then the house would have quadrupled in value. I wonder if the car is still running.

Isn't it often pointed out that your own home is the most dangerous place to be, statistically?
More accidents happen in the home than anywhere else?

It would be safer to move the precious kiddiwinkles out of the million pound fire-hazzard and put them in the £500 banger.

What's it cost to build a house - they're all "bespoke", even on an estate. If you asked for 1m houses built to the same spec and which only need to last 15 years, and you ignore land price, I dare say you find each one quite cheap.

On a like for like, it could be argued that the first new Mondeo of the production line cost $4bn, which is the rough developement cost I was told.

They did build houses like that after the war. Prefabs were very cheap, but lasted a lot longer than 15 years.

cars are fashion items, that's what drives depreciation.

I take the 'retro' view to these things.

Retro in clothes is in fashion: I have the hats, clothes etc and are very trendy i.m.o.

So why not have a retro car - personally I love older cars - they have history. I mean, a house is rarely new, so then why have a new car?

If we lived according to the government, we would be health and safety freaks - we would drive at 30mph in town and 70mph on the motorway, and scream if we see anyone going fast. Health and safety only to a point i.m.o, not overboard!

2 Cars in this household, both VW Golfs (sorry! ;o)) one 6 1/2 years old and owned from new, one 9 years old and owned for 3 1/2 years. I,ve worked the running costs out and it costs more than a 3rd of my take home salary to keep them on the road (insurance, RFL, fuel, servicing and repairs and depreciation). If we changed both cars and had them on credit our annual running costs would be double or even treble, meaning we'd have to live in the cars and eat the interiors!

I suppose our house cost about £30 to build.

I don't want any car to last as long as our house has (approx 180 years).. but I suppose it probably would have been rebuilt as often:-)
