Fumbling 1.25 Zetec - ukcar
Hi,

I have a Fiesta 1.25 Zetec that is losing power.

It has almost no response to the accelerator, will not go up hills and eventually grinds to a halt. Ford dealer says it is either ecu failure or complete exhaust and catylist replacement but will not commit to either.

Basically they have given up.

All the usuals have been checked: HT electrics, fuel, etc. and seem OK.

Anybody able to throw some light onto what it could be?

Thanks

does it rev up when stood?
if yes then a good possibility is the back box has collapsed internally

Agreed; if it's that bad, then simply loosening-off the cat from the manifold to create a big leak then trying it is the first test.

The other way to check if it is a back box failure is too hit the base of the back box with your hand and if you hear metal then the silencer has failed and could be causing the blockage

ecu failure

Very, very, very unlikely and the default answer in my experience from dealers when they can't fix something.

Cheers

This happened to my mate's Fiesta a few months ago. As others have said, it's because the exhaust gas can't escape because of a blockage. Check for a collapsed cat. Does the exhaust manifold get hotter than normal? They can even glow red when there's an exhaust blockage. No way is it the ECU. If Ford can't diagnose this............

If the ECU had failied you would not even be able to start your car.
