Have a look at the prices on www.usrentacar.co.uk - they're heavily recommended on the Disney forums and we always use them.
However the weakness of the USD has meant that some of the car firms direct sites can look very competitive. Check out dollar.co.uk and dollar.com, although if you use the US site it used to get a bit messy as the insurances were all separate (don't know if that's still the case).
Platininum usually gives you extra drivers on the insurance free (which you may or may not want), as well as the initial tank of gas. £60 sounds way OTT - I wonder if it's charging you a weekly amount 4 times? If you don't get the Platinum cover then you'll simply have to prepay for a tank of gas, usually at fairly normal prices. Depending on tank size, then it'll cost maybe $60.
I used to prefer to return the car full, but most companies have done away with that option. It can be pain if you're in a rush, and they really used to sting you on gas price if the car wasn't full.

I rented from Dollar car out of LA earlier this year. The inclusive insurance might have pushed $60 not £s.
We'd to return the tank empty. I thought the rental was pretty cheap and we went for a large auto car - turned out to be a Toyota Avalon 3.5l V6. A voce cruiser if you are covering lots of miles like us.

Do any of these packages and quotes include the high priced CDW waiver? I hired a Hertz car in Germany last month and their extra CDW charge was only 2 Euros less than the hire charge for the car for the week! Needless to say I had already bought a one year CDW insurance, unlimited hires in Europe for one year, for £49 = Bargain! Can also be bought for USA and paid for per day that you require it which might be cheaper for one hire during a 2 or 3 week holiday.
|
You can use this, and I've considered it long and hard for the US, but it's fraught with problems. Apparently most US companies refuse to recognise it, meaning they'll only let you take the car if you pay a hefty deposit (I wouldn't have a problem with that, but many people go the US with pretty tight credit limts - or even no credit card at all).
The concern I had was that if anything does actually happen you may be expected to settle the full value of the car and then claim it back.
It's offered by www.insurance4carhire.com . NatWest used to offer it at a lower price (I think it was untimately with the same company) but I haven't seen that for a while.
|
I think you're mixing up CDW and 'Super CDW' (the latter is effectively covering just the excess on the rental company's normal CDW). I don't think you can buy an annual generic 'CDW' cover, can you?
|
Yes, muddle by me. I was referring to a policy which absolves you from paying the first (say) $1000 of any claim not cover for the total loss of the car. Insurance 4hire car etc sell it for USA so I would imagine that is valid if not acceptable. I have used them for 5 years and made one claim in their early days which was well handled.

Try airline network .co.uk for Dollar car rental.
Am getting chrysler 300 inc full tank petrol (platinumdeal)for £30
CHEAPER than Dollar Direct to include all insurances etc.
No connection other than satisfied customer..
PS does any one know if this comes with sat nav as standard???

I use rental cars in the USA for 18 weeks each year.
It is always cheaper to hire from the UK than the USA.
Many rental firms hired through UK brokers allow 2 drivers. Unless you need more than 2 drivers, all the premium package(Gold on Dollar/Alamo - Platinum on Budget) gives you is a free tank of petrol. With petrol around $2.80 a US gallon that is worth approx $50-$60 for a luxury car like a Chrysler 300.
For up to 2 weeks it is worth getting a premiumPackage, over that it is not - unless of course you need the extra drivers.
The standard 300 does not have sat nav with Dollar. Incidentally you will have difficulty ensuring for certain you will get a 300; although they are plentiful at major airports.
For 4 years I had the policy from insurance4carhire mentioned above, but only Alamo will accept that now and they have increased their rates a great deal.
About £150 a week is the 'going rate' for a 300.

Another vote for Airline Network.
I also found them to be cheaper compared to Dollars own website.
This was last year when we got a Honda Odyssey with the platinum deal for Las Vegas.

Every broker is cheaper than Dollar's own site; by a big margin.
I have found there is no single cheapest site covering every type of car in every location in the USA.
Most brokers have special deals - upgrades etc. Some have 'exclusive' arrangements for express collection(you don't have to queue at rental desks - which can be a real pain). Nearly all the cheapest deals are with Dollar/Alamo/Budget.
To give an example, I am currently renting a 5 door compact hatchback in Florida(a Dodge Caliber in a fetching shade of blue! - with a nice new car smell). in absolutely basic spec, no central locking, computer, electric windows or electric mirrors; but obviously A/C, Automatic and Cruise.
It is costing me £87 a week for 2 drivers, express pick up and of course all insurances; same deal might not be available next week - or might be cheaper!
Not a car I would chose to tour the USA but adequate for my current needs.
A couple of vists ago I got a Lincoln Town car with every electronic device imagainable(and no handbook!). A real dog of a car IMO. No more legroom than any other car but very wide and a boot big enough for people to go to sleep in.
P.S. looking at preview £87 is 87 UK pounds

anyone know what car range theyre really likley to have at lax?
airline network is showing a caliber, stratos, charger and c300...i could stretch to a charger if it really is one as id like the large covered boot, i assume a caliber is a open hatchback and i will be out n about with my luggage onbaord

Hi Steve
I returned yesterday drom USA, I used Dollar through airline network, very competitive, i had the extra cover for around £30, i got a "Full size" as i wanted the charger, when i arrived at MCO i got a Mercury Grand Marques, 4.6 V8, after 1 night i returned to change it for a charger which was lovely, they gave me another tank of fuel too as i had used about 1/4 out of the mercury, no problems at all, would highly reccomend dollar to anyone, very helpful even ran after me in the airport as i'd left my mobile in the side pocket, would you get that over here???

That used to be the case, but if you use the fully inclusive rates from their UK website, they're there or thereabouts now.

Which do you usually use for Florida?

I believe you will find this is the same as Alamo. It is $5 a day and covers you for punctures and a flat battery.
The problem is that many(not all) agents on the rental desk will try to 'push' extra insurances - often for cover that is included in your holiday insurance.
Whenever I have used Alamo I have refused the cover.
Indeed I once had a flat battery(it transpired that it was caused by a fault in the alarm) I had to pay(sign for) $40 for the mechanic being called out, but I changed the car and the $40 was waived without a problem.

>> I have found there is no single cheapest site covering every type of car in >> every location in the USA. >> Which do you usually use for Florida?
I always use a small firm called Sunchase www.sunchase.co.uk (contact is Peter)
I have had consistently excellent service from him for several years. he deals with Alamo/Budget/Dollar in USA and many other countries.
This was discussed a couple of years ago and I made the same recommendation and I believe some members of the Backroom used him and reported favourably - a search for 'sunchase' should produce the posts.
Several of my friends use the firm on my recommendation as well.
Usual disclaimer - I have no connection with the firm other than as a satisfied customer.
|
I can confirm that I used Sunchase on Cardews recommendation and was well satisfied .
Peter at Sunchase told me that he set up the firm to arrange stateside car hire without the usual problems he had found of the 'extras' you find being pushed by the companies at the airport when he went to Florida for his holidays..
He will send you a voucher in our case from Alomo UK which you present to the Car Hire Desk at the airport.
I flew to Atlanta and we had a Cadillac from a choice of around two dozen luxury motors from Alamo USA.
We had ISTR the Platinum package and had three named drivers and although the girl on the desk did try half heartedly to flog us extra insurance when I pointed out what was already covered she just got on with the paperwork.
Sunchase highly recommended.

as well as an alternative you can inspect such a service as xxxx. I use it for about a year, I often rent a car there. I like that there is support in so many cities around the world, because sometimes you have to travel because of work

Another old thread resurrected - for the usual reason.
It’s fun to deconstruct the language in these spam messages.
1. "as well as an alternative" - pretty incomprehensible, possibly an example of tautology.
2. "you can inspect such a service as rental24h.com" - not sure how you "inspect" a service.
3. "I often rent a car there" - where, exactly?
4. "...sometimes you have to travel because of work" - er... yes. Statement from the Ministry of the Bleeding Obvious.
Computer-generated? Semi-literate spammer? Who knows?
