I think I may know the answer to this question but may I pose it anyway.
My Golf is coming up to its 3rd anniversary on Dec 16, the day it was registered. My Road tax run out on 30th Nov before which, no doubt, I'll receive a reminder. Am I correct in thinking that I will NOT require and MOT certificate to renew said tax?
No doubt they will remind me that an MOT certificate will be needed to drive the car after Dec 16th, however.

As your MOT runs out in the next calender month after tax is due, then you will be able to renew the tax.
If you weren't already aware, you can of course get a new MOT 30 days before it's expiry. Just take along your V5C document when you get it tested to confirm first date of registration.

Correct, you need to renew the tax between 16th Nov and 14th Dec but don't need an MOT until 16th Dec.
|
Your MOT and Insurance have to be valid on the date the Tax comes into force - 1st of the month.
No doubt they will remind me that an MOT certificate will be needed to drive the car after Dec 16th, however.
You will not get an MOT reminder.

As the tax runs out on the 30th Nov, you need to renew it by then, not by the 14th Dec.

The 14 days grace period is an urban myth, needs to be taxed no later than the 30th November.

You need to tax for the end of the month. If a traffic cop saw your out of date tax disc then you could get a fine - but traffic police...
DVLA themselves DO have a 14 day grace period to re-tax a car - i.e. the automatic fine does not come within the first two weeks.

Renew on-line about 1 week before the end of the month and the Postie (if he is not on strike!) will do the rest.
On-line is as painless as you can get (parting with £00s) but at least there is no queue with someone sending Xmas parcels to all corners of the earth.

I took our Hyundai for its first MOT about 30 days before the car's 3rd Birthday on 1st September 2007. The tax was also due on 1st September.
I took the car to the MoT station on 2nd August without any documents and was given an MoT certificate which expired on 1st September 2008. Did not need to show my V5C.
Came home and taxed car on line on 15th August starting 1st September.
So, get car MoT on 20th November, with a certificate which will expire on 16th Dec 2008 and tax online without any hassle.

Thanks everyone.
I'll renew my tax as soon as the form comes through the letter box and within the appopriate period so that it is taxed from the 1st Dec and then have an MOT done on my VW Golf (while-u-wait) at my local Ford dealership before Dec 16th (its 3rd Birthday).
Notice I did not refer to my car as 'She' or 'Her'!!

Surely a VW Golf would be a "he" ;-)

It's definitely worth thinking about not automatically registering a car on the 1st if you're buying new.
I had to tax 3 cars for 1st Sept, but they were all originally registered on various dates during the month so being able to do it online from 15th Aug without having to worry about the MOT timing was very fortunate. Two of them were being MOT'd for the first time and the new system means you don't need the V5 to post date the certificate.
We didn't pick up my daughter's car until 2nd March and I was quite dismayed to find the dealer had registered it on the 1st.

Would it not be better at a VAG dealership? That way, if it fails on anything covered by the warranty, they'll then put it right - providing of course VW gives a 3 yr warranty on their products?

I don't expect it to fail on anything that would be covered by warranty!!
