Hi guys, my 1st visit so hope someone can help. Just got my beloved 53 plate 406 HDi estate back from insurance repairers after a kind soul re-arranged the shape for me. Fab job to the bodywork but key fob won't lock/unlock doors now. Changed battery to no avail, and the key tends to just spin round in driver/passenger door, making locking/unlocking a nightmare.
Repairers took it back in yesterday to local pug dealers, who say blah de blah de blah, and it will cost £170 !!
Have been on these sites which tell you about plip programming but this seems old info and didn't work.
Thanks and happy motoring, Jan

Let your insurers pay for it;if it worked before the repair,it should be working afterwards. If your key just goes round and round it's not the remote-something hasn't been put back correctly.

Agree - My approach would be along the lines of "when I gave you the car it worked fine and it doesn't now so...?"

Thanks for that UncleR, I've been a bit more assertive with the insurance co and they've agreed to investigate.

Two separate issues here:
1. The door lock is supposed to be like this - it's a security 'feature', in that only the proper key is actually supposed to engage the barrel and make it turn (prevents use of screwdriver or similar). Trouble is, as you have found out, if the door locks are not used, then it can prevent the proper key working! Should be able to make it work by squirting some WD-40 in the lock then pushing the key in/out a few times, and making sure it is well pushed in, and the lock slot is vertical, before you try and lock / unlock the car.
2. The key fob may have become out of synch with the car, and it might be possible to synch it back in. The instructions might be in the handbook, otherwise I can possibly find them out later. If this doesn't work then it will need to go to the dealer to be reprogrammed, and possibly have new keys - but as mentioned this should be to the insurer / repairer's account - it worked when it went in after all!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Thanks RichardW, the WD-40 has certainly helped, but I'm guessing your 2nd point about it being out of synch may be the bigger prob. No instructions in handbook. Think I'll wait til the insurance get back to me,then if needbe I'll post another message and maybe you could tell me about the synch instructions. I've also been finding out about this diminuative value angle, as clearly the car isn't in the same condition it was pre-accident.

Re synch procedure for 406:
Switch ignition on
Press lock button for 10 seconds
Switch ignition off, remove key, wait 5 seconds
Repeat for other keys

Hi again RichardW.
Just Re-Posting this as I knew I'd seen how to do this somewhere.
I really apprieciate these pieces of Knowledge.
I also picked up that if the engine cover that sits on top of the engine comes away from its mounings (which is more often than not) it rattles against the OIL FILLER CAP which causes it to leak oil.
Therefore replace the cap (£4.08 at Pug Dealer 11-03-09) and remove the offending cover. Hope this helps others with a puzzling oil leak.
All the best
Steve

Thanksjc2 for that advice, I've spoken again to my insurers, and they're 'making enquiries' for me

Seems to be a particular habit of Pugs and Citroens - of the three folk I know with post-99 Xantias, none of them have working remote fobs! And mine had a lock barrel that just rotated when the non-functioning remote gave up the ghost and forced me to use the key.
Any idea if the above procedure is the same for Xantias? (facelifted model, folding key type fob with transponder chip inside?). I'm guessing it's probably a dealer job when transponders get involved....

my guess is that the car battery has gone flat, and on the late 406 which has the multiplex system when the car battery goes totaly flat the cars security system wont pick up the signal from the fob, therefore meaning a trip to the local dealers to be recoded on the pug diagnostic, cost me £35 takes half an hour. and only the dealers have the machine to do the job. hope this helps.
