Hi,
My Accord has started making an oddly harmonic humming noise, probably about 80% of the time.
The sound seems to be coming from the exhaust, anyone had the same?
Thanks,
Lou

It's a 1999 Y, 2L Petrol with about 50k miles.
Incidentally, how do I edit my original post to add this in?
Thanks,

Does it hum if you flick it into neutral whist travelling. If could be a loose heat cshield of perhaps in fact a rear wheel bearing humming to itself, normall starts ar 45 to 50 mph. Regards Peter

The hum starts within a second or two of firing up the engine and can be heard when stationary or when moving.
It doesn't seem to vary with speed or RPM.
I had a wheel bearing go bad on a previous Mondeo, this is quite a different sound.
It doesn't bother me too much, but if it's a sign that something is going to fail then I'd like to know!

Fuel Pump, constant noise not speed or rev dependant. Regards Peter

Cheers Bee boy, I was getting worried that I'd turned the car into an apiary.
Anyway, while it's running as sweet as honey, I'm not too worried.

Unfortunately you can't. I have done it for you though. DD, BR Moderator.

If you sit in the car with the door open and it is quite, turn the ignition on and you may hear the pump power up for just 1 to 1.5 seconds then it shuts down as the engine is not turning over. Then you start the car and by the time idle is established and the starter has shut down you may hear the same hum. This is the main fuel pump. on some cars this is an indication that the lifter pump in the tank has failed but am do not know whether your vehicle has a lifter pump or the main pump is just getting noisy. Regards Peter

Thanks Peter, will have a try at this.
I was wondering if it could be the silencer or exhaust pipes vibrating on the hangers, but it's too consistent for that, I reckon.

Yes, I would endorse a fuel pump problem from the info gathered. Is it worse in cold weather? That is, does it sometimes go away when warm? Not a difficult fix - second hand pump from a breakers will be around £65. You will need a big tool or ingenuity to remove the large plastic locknut or just hit it anti-clockwise with a wooden drift ;-) Wear gloves or you'll cut your hands when trying to get it out!

In fact, to double check you should not start the car, but put ignition into pos II (where all instrument warning lights come on). This should prime the fuel system and you will hear the pump hum for 1-2 secs while it pressurises the system if it is the fuel pump at fault.

I just tried this and it doesn't make the noise.
The noise starts about 2 seconds after the engine starts up, nothing happens in pos II.

Could it be a heater fan?
Could it be a radiator fan? Many cars I've come across have a radiator fan running permanently when the air-con's switched on.
|
Many cars only prime the pump once in any time period after which the sytem pressure is released and then it will prime again if turned on. Worth checking the fans are all off though and you need to locate the Pump so you can listen more closely. Regards Peter

Pump is in the boot just behind the seats.

The sound seems to be coming from the rear, so I reckon the fuel pump is a possible.
But today there was no noise at all...
I had the aircon regassed yesterday, maybe that's made the difference?

A late reply to the above problem.
The same thing has just happened to my (auto) 2001 Accord, a high pitched hum coming from the the rear end of the car. Went and saw my mechanic and he said it was the fuel pump. It's the only thing that could make a noise.
It's been doing it for a while, and only when the car warms up.
I suppose I'd better get it fixed before it packs up completely.
This is my second Accord, the first one I had for 7 yrs, (10yrs old when I sold it) and apart from normal wear and tear and servicing, hardly spent a penny on it.
This one I bought from my brother-in-law when it was five years old, and have done nothing but pay out on it.
Never buy a car from a relation
