is it ok to eat whilst driving? say a big mac or banana or drinking a cup of tea (out of the flask) ive always wondered where one stands on this ....thanks

No. There was a case a few years ago where a woman got done in a queue of traffic, edging forward at probably less than walking pace, brushing her hair. Lack of care and attention, or some like that.

If it impairs your ability to control your car, it is not OK.

Banana probably OK,

Big Mac definitely not OK for me. Maybe you are a more skillful Big Mac eater than I am, though.

Northumbria police do not allow you to eat an apple while driving:

Round here you could safely eat a three-course meal with wine - the chances of passing a policeman are much the same as winning the lottery.

I used to be a field service engineer in a previous life and the best thing about the company Astra was the flat dashboard so you could stand a cup on it and pour out a cuppa from the Thermos as you drove along.... allegedly.

Little tray in front of clock on a BX also just right size for a thermos cup. Difficult bit was unstoppering the flask.

SWMBO frowned on the practice but when did that stop anybody!!!

Drinks slots in the Berlingo will hold one of those insulated "non spill" cups.

I'm good at eating and driving, I don't drop a single crumb, and can drive fine. I like to drink a cup of tea as I drive, and sometimes I eat iced cream in summer.

Once saw a policeman driving a police transit using one hand, the other had a sandwich in it feeding his face.yes it was while driving in a built up area.

Only today,I saw a busdriver driving on the road with one hand, plastic cup of something in the other ! Early morning so I presume it was hot .

UNMARKED CARS - Skipton North yorkshire police officer lied when he pull me over. He claimed I was eating a sandwich with both hands off the wheel - NOT TRUE. I had eaten most of it, then I squished it so it woukd fit into on hand & when he flashed me I had only taken two bites.

I denied his claimes over & over again & several time I asked him to use his discretion but he said no, then he looked up to find the highset penalty of £60 + 3 points. He lied & he knew I knew this. even my local bobbie shoke his head at his actions.

It was no good looking for speeding fines with the snow so he was out to find motorists without seatbelts or eating or using thier phones just to get his numbers up - so very sad.

I gave him my blessings & left. Maybe he will be one of the many who is unemployed soon. Lying never gets over looked. No wonder the police are treatd with such suspion & hostility. Well Im thankful that my local bobbies are not from the same tree as this one. bles him & forgive hime for his lies. C

May it please your worships to the above Not Guilty plea I draw your attention to an admission :-

"NOT TRUE. I had eaten most of it, then I squished it so it would fit into on hand & when he flashed me I had only taken two bites."

Guilty therefore of driving when not having proper control - maybe a Section 3 if it was pushed.

Skipton Police are brilliant.

Welcome to the forum, Chipbutty, but in this case I don't think you're going to get very much sympathy.

Maybe the officer was on the zealous side, but his point is essentially 'how would you react to an emergency - e.g. the need to turn sharply to avoid a child in the road - while one hand was busy squishing a sandwich?' Or how can you change gear, or indiavte a turn, with a sandwich in your hand?

Please don't use the term 'lies' when you accept the officer's case - that one hand had part of a sandwich (squished or not) in it.

in an emergency you would just drop the sandwich freeing up both hands..... no problem!

"UNMARKED CARS - Skipton North yorkshire police officer lied when he pull me over. He claimed I was eating a sandwich with both hands off the wheel - NOT TRUE. I had eaten most of it"

Guilty as charged.

Why bother our time when you have admitted the offence?

There is a sliding scale:

Banana: Acceptable

Mars Bar: Acceptable

Sausage Roll: Marginal , depends on flakiness

Cornish Pasty (Ginster): Marginal / Not acceptable with brown sauce

Spaghetti Bolognese: Not acceptable unless driving in Italy

Hamburgers: Variable depending on contents

Fish and Chips: Chips acceptable, but stop for the haddock.

Christmas Dinner: Not acceptable unless EITHER chauffeur-driven OR automatic

" in an emergency you would just drop the sandwich freeing up both hands..... no problem! "

Something that you can't do when holding a cigarette, yet cigarettes seem to be acceptable ???
