Peugeot HDI Engine - Alan Town
Hello !

Does anyone know whether it is possible to uprate the 90 HP version of this engine to the 110 Hp version.

My 406 feels a little "flat" compared to previous Xantia Turbodiesel, I think there is a piece of kit availible to upgrade VW tdi engines, but don't know of one for this motor.

Cheers for any help you can give.

Alan

Try an intercooler.

An intercooler would help but I'm not sure where it is located on the 406. On the Xantia HDi I am fairly sure that it is fitted ahead of the radiator, not across the top of the engine as it was in the TD. Pipework may be a little difficult.

You could consider re-chipping it using Superchips or Tuning Box gizmos. Look up

or

All turbo-diesels worth their salt have an intercooler fitted as standard. The 406 HDI definately has one. If the engine feels flat, which it shouldn't do, then there is probably a fault. I haven't driven an HDI but past Peugeot TD's have been flyers.
Re: Peugeot HDI Engine - Alan Town
Hey readers !

Ive found that the floor mat was caught under the throttle pedal and preventing full bore acceleration, I only got the car last friday ( 20 000 on clock ) but now the offending mat has been removed, it goes like a tomcat with a firework up its ar*e

I had a Rover 420 GSDI immediately before which was a fair bit quicker but much less refined.

why are petrol engines still popular ???????

I have a Tuning Box on my Focus Tdi. It gives a claimed extra 22bhp & proportional torque increase.
The performance is transformed, and it has the advantage over 'chipping' of being easy to remove (20 mins for the Focus) for servicing or sale.
Highly recommended - and the importer is a very helpful fellow, too!
Re: Peugeot HDI Engine - John Kenyon
There are two variants of the 2.0 HDi, both have a turbo, the 90BHP lacks
the intercooler of the 110BHP version.

AFAIK you can get either version with the 406, but only the 90BHP with
the 306.

This compares with 92BHP from pre-96 1.9 XUD9T or 90BHP from the
post-96 version.

Re: Peugeot HDI Engine - Brian
You are not alone: I have had the same mat problem.
Moral: start with the simple things and work your way up to the more expensive solutions.
Happy motoring !
Re: Peugeot HDI Engine - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up Ltd.)
Before chucking lots of money at your 406 check that you have full operation of the accelerator. The one I did the cambelt (shudder) on recently only had about 60% movement due to a) one too many rubber mats in the footwell (chucked in the boot) and b) too much slack in the cable, adjusted at the pump. Also check that the "shock absorber" on the pump is removed as this will cause the accelerator arm spindle to wear prematurely (apparently).
Re: Peugeot HDI Engine - John Kenyon
Re the damper on the diesel pump accelerator linkage.

For whose benefit is this fitted - the car and it's occupants or to save the
pump from over quick changes of the "engine speed control input".

Is there any recommendation regarding removing this on the XUD9T
IDI engine?

Re: Peugeot HDI Engine - Alan Town
Hey I thought there was something suspicious about the throttle response, Will check for a slack cable - mats now removed. Can you tell me more about this damper ?

I had a Rover 420 Turbo Diesel before this ( Xantia was before that ) - which was an absolute flyer in comparison so I guess I will have to get used to the Peugeot.

Whose engine do Rover use ? I thought they bought them in From PSA, and with extre weight of only 200 Kg would have expected Peugeot to be almost as quick.

Cheers
