Cars named after places - Round The Bend
Overtaken by a Seat Cordoba the other day and started musing on cars named after places.
Immediate ones that come to mind are:

Fords Capri, Cortina (and I suppose, the Anglia).
Morris Oxford
Austin Cambridge
Anything by Bristol or Lincoln

Must be many more but can't think of any recent examples ones since the Cordoba - perhaps all the good ones have gone?

PS: Not sure if we've covered this before - apols if we have

Pontiac, although a Native American tribe I think, may well have a place named after it that predates the car. Chrysler New Yorker squeezes in perhaps. And Plymouth of course.

Triumph Dolomite (mountain range). Tatra (mountains). Perhaps Sunbeam Alpine stretching it a bit... There was a Frazer-Nash model called the Monaco I seem to remember.

Vauxhall Wyvern ??

A Wyvern is the type of dragon as seen on the Vauxhall logo. There's a Wyvern Tavern pub not far from the old Vauxhall factory in Luton, but I suspect that the car was named after the dragon rather than the slightly dodgy* boozer.

*I've never been a fan of this place since the very attractive lass I was dating when I was 18 dumped me in there, just because I still had a terrible hangover from the night before!

You mean they weren't named after paper sizes? :-)

Actually A4 was the official designation for Hitler's V-2 missile. Was slightly surprised at the time that Audi decided to use that...

And the TT was indeed indirectly named after the race, via the somewhat slower NSU TT of the 1960s.

Pavarotti born in Modena. Ferrari 360 Modena.

"Modena: An ancient town, it is the seat of an archbishop, but is now best known as "the capital of engines", since the factories of the famous Italian sports car makers Ferrari, Bugatti, De Tomaso, Lamborghini, Pagani and Maserati are located there, and all, except Lamborghini, have headquarters in the city or nearby. Additionally, Lamborghini is headquartered not far away in a small village in the adjacent Province of Bologna."

As an old issue of Viz magazine had it, Ford should continue its policy of naming cars after "top shelf" magazines.

The Californinan was nothing to do with the Minx

Actually you're wrong AS.

It was a Minx for, er, minxes. A mere cosmetic variant though.

Friend of mine at school's mother had one. One of the eight schools I went to through no fault of my own, and to my great long-term advantage whatever people may think....

i helped move a california from a lock up in hull, a nice car they were ,loved the back windows, unfortunately the chap who was getting this project died this year so his immaculate car that he got this one for parts for is now languishing in deepest cumbria till his brother decides its fate,if it wasnt for the fact that im cured on old cars and rust chasing i would seriously bid him on it
Cars named after places - Lud
So there really was an Imp Californian?

How naff can you get. Still, passed my driving test in an Imp. Still can't imagine how it happened in that ghastly little motor. I suppose it was so difficult to drive slowly and smoothly that it must have seemed a challenge. Of course I'd been driving semi-legally for years fortunately without serious trouble, but naturally it was very difficult to discipline myself down to go slowly and po-facedly enough to pass the test...

Some people would sentimentally add 'Happy days!' at this point, but to me the whole thing was a thundering nuisance.
