I have recently developed a problem with my E30. It has started overheating! inlet hoses are piping hot but the outlet hose and radiator a cold. Took car out recently no problem but today went 3/4 up on the temp gauge then sparying water from the radiator tank, lights in board telling me to check coolant. Checked for air block in hoses, flushed the rad too! No blockages! Looked for thermostat and there isnt one there has been taken out.. Could it be the water pump??? Have done 100k, never changed it although it has FSH so double checked and its never been done. At my wits end as to what it could be.
Thanks

>>Looked for thermostat and there isnt one there has been taken out
This speaks volumes, it implies someone previous had an overheating problem and removed it as a temporary cure until they offloaded the motor. How long have you had the car?

Not had it that long. Originally bought the car to have the engine out of it (same engine size). It came with FSH. Engines were swapped two weeks ago in to my 325i Sport and i have only just got the problem. Have looked again and got a mate to look the thermostat is definately not there! Obviously dont want it overheating and then the head goes as this is what happened on my old engine. Other then that the engine is fine, clear oil etc.

"..and then the head goes." You may need to revise the tense there....

Although a check of the water pump for a loose impellor would be worthwhile.

These were plagued with overheating problems. I would first check for combustion gasses in the coolant - no point in buying new parts if the head's gone.

Had the head checked just in case but they said the head is fine!
|
I took it to a specialised engine company who tested it for cracks and gases leaking etc. They said it was ok!!

Go with Aprilia's suggestion and have the header tank sniffed for hydrocarbons; if they're there, it's pretty conclusive.

If the heads ok then look at the radiator it could be silted up no amount of flushing will clear it.
