Horrendous incident!!!
But I can bet that those thugs, if caught at all by our wonderful police force, will be give max sentence of 50 hours of community service.
So, what we can expect??

They'll do no time cos there ain't enough Probation officers to back up the sentence. Not here in Devon anyway as I talk to the powers that be and that's their story. Birch the pink fluffy dice first time then up the stakes. Two old boys that I knew never revisited birch territory. Both normal guys after that. Worked for the rest of their lives and were both a pleasure to know.
'Great' Britain..............MD

Don't know about the birch mate but you do wonder if the USA three strikes and you're out might work over here. Prisons crouded yes but maybe not if even three petty crimes means life in prison!
Mods I know this is all drifting off the topic. But something has to stop these low lifes stealing cars. In this instance lets hope it was for a bigger job and they were caught on locked away for a long time.

"They'll do no time cos there ain't enough Probation officers to back up the sentence"
Quite. One recent Home Secretary changed law so scrotes do not get out of jail until they pass a series of tests. There was no additional funding to do tests. So Catch 22... So judges rule it's illegal... many likely to be released soon.
Personally I have a morbid fear of burglars and am in fear of my life...

the problem is that 10 years ago manchester was the capitol of nicked mk 3 fiestas prior to red keys, these scumbags then moved onto corsas and now all cars are un-nickable so johny no brain has to find a way to get a kick after his 28 year old part time dad tells him what he used to do for night time entertainment, i dont know the answer but i do know that i would happily pay another tax to have a permanent copper in my community,we are going to end up in this country with haves and have nots where the haves live in gated communities just like other parts of the world if we are not careful, theres too much civil liberties crap theres right and theres wrong the wrong ones need locking up not being told its their absent fathers fault
yes?
motor related?
ive seen enough car crime damaged vehicles and gutless authorities to last a life time,im sick of the times ive had petty damage caused
|
You're not wrong bell boy unfortunately. We need more police on the streets and more appropriate punishment. But with jails full it's a slapped wrist and on your way.
In early 2000 I have the keys to m Golf GTI 1.8T taken. Spec was such that it was probably close to unique so probably broken for spares or taken out of the country. I was glad they got the keys in the night without us knowing! If they wanted it they'd eventually get it, e.g. assaulted/threatened coming out of the house. Around the time there were some car jackings too.
The worst bit is living in the "nice" area means the thieves/thugs come from the not so nice areas! I now make sure my car is the least flash of the neighbours, although I get a brand new one in October.

I receive DT by e-mail.
Please read the excellent article of the 29th August by Simon Heffer, about 'paying for an underclass' I believe it is worth the time.
Best regards to all decent people...........MD

Hello everyone, and once again many thanks for your kind, supportive words.
There are really too many people to reply to individually but I have a few comments to the following posters :
bigbirdy - what an amazingly kind offer to someone you don't know.
Vin - thanks for your comments about the thugs just taking 'stuff'. I agree entirely and it is this fact that gives me and my family some comfort - we are getting round to the fact that they were not really interested in 'us', but they simply wanted to get what they wanted, as quickly as possible - what must have frustrated them was the fact we had locked all our doors - so their only way in was the patio door.
Barney100 - I like that 7-iron story ! Cheers.
PhilW - a this very moment, as I said last night, I could not face leaving my family but I am hoping this feeling will subside. I am a normal down-to-earth type of guy and realise that getting back to a normal routine as quickly as possible will probably be the best thing.
My son had a very good sleep again and spent a happy couple of hours at a rugby session but was quiet and distant - but he is starting to eat again. He also said he likes telling his friends about what happened - maybe this is something that will help him arrange things in his own mind. We are keeping a very close watch on him though .....
Will keep in touch through this thread as things develop.
Many thanks again to everyone

Allow your Son to speak loudly about it even if he becomes 'cocky' or showy with it. It will do him no harm in this awful society of 'ours'. It is ony when, (and if), he goes silent on the matter that you have a real problem.
Take care.....MD

Saw a recent article in Auto Express about the latest security feature being a fingerprint reader that prevents the car being started without the "correct" finger in it!
Having read this thread, I think I would much rather only have to hand over my keys.......

In either Auto Express or Auto Car a few years back, I read someone had fitted a similar device to his Merc in South Africa. You guessed it - thieves cut off his finger to steal the car. So lose car and finger.

You guessed it - thieves cut off his finger to steal the car. So lose car and finger.
But didn't Merc then revise the system to also detect a pulse so that security system knew whether the finger was still attached to the owner of the car?
|
I think the example I gave was aftermarket and not MB fit.
I know our parent company does finger and palm print recognition using blood vessels as the actual thing being checked. So no blood flow means a severed finger/hand useless. We use finger print readers (plus ID cards) in our data centres which is kind of cool.

We really, really don't want systems like that. When I lived in Africa, people started fitting devices which immobilised after 5-30 mins. The upshot was that the thieves took the owner with them, so they could force them to restart the car when needed.
One of my work colleagues was dropped off a good hours drive from the city where he and his car were taken. He had been terrified that he was going to be killed because he could (potentially) identify the thieves. He was left stranded with no jacket, no money, no ID.

Quite. We pay insurance to cover the financial loss of a car for the express reason of not having to defend it with our lives.
Remember this every time you are under threat for your car:
:Its only car - Its insured.

sounds like fawlty towers----- is not rat it harmster
no way would i want finger print recognition in my car

JDC My heartfelt sympathy for the dreadful ordeal yourself and family suffered.
I think children get through these incidents even better than adults as they have so many other new happenings all the time. In a few weeks I?m sure it will be only a distant memory.
I believe yourself and the wife will take much longer and particularly women feel it even worse.
I agree with all the comments regarding what these people should suffer when convicted but we know from seeing the news it just doesn?t happen.
Having worked in prisons for over thirty years my hatred and contempt of these people increases, and seeing the attentions and bleeding heart fraternity who blame the rest of society for their crimes makes me wonder if the lunatics haven?t taken over the asylum.
Just thankful you got away with only property lost.
Regards
wemyss

jdc, I was shocked and read your earlier posts with my mouth and eyes wide open! I can't add much other than to say I and many others are thinking of you and wish you and son well.
|
jdc - I am truly shocked, I hope that you and your family can soon return to normal and put this horrendous experience behind you. Just glad that none of your family were hurt. All the very best.

Thanks for the kind comments guys - much appreciated.
Quick update : Subaru has now been CSi'd and is ready to go to the insurance repairer which is very handily placed about 5 minutes away from the Subaru dealer, as new lock set will be required plus full mechanical check.
Fabia has chased through Lancashire by police cars and helicopter then abandoned but the thugs were caught and now in custody. Police are trying to piece everything together as they think my cars were going to be added to a few other stolen for a major armed robbery ..... different world isn't it ????!!
Previously I reported they had caught the thugs in the Fabia but the police got this mixed up with another part of the same gang they picked up in Volvo in another part of Lancashire.
Not sure I will want the Fabia back at all now - only trouble is it will be recorded as a stolen/recovered vehicle so I assume this will have some knock-back when it comes to selling / part exchanging it.
My son is much much perkier today thankfully , so things are slowly (or quickly...) starting to come back together.

best of luck mate, i gave up having flash cars and decent stereo systems, and now put up with more bog standard rep fodder with standard fit radio, its just too much hassle and risk the way the country is run these days
|
I'd echo the thoughts of others, and cannot begin to imagine what you must be going through. WRT to your Fabia though, my understanding is that the car would only be recorded as stolen/recovered if the recovery took place after the insurance co and paid out on the claim. Quick recovery just results in a repair I think, which would not be recorded. Just my understanding though, so could be wrong... Would still agree with you though - I wouldn't want it back...

Just spoke to the Detective about this and he confirmed that unfortunately both cars will be recorded as "stolen / recovered" on the natioanl vehicle database. I guess that means if a garage do an HPI check at trade-in time, they will uncover this juicy bit of information ......

|
jdc - just caught up with your story - you did the right thing - you'll never forget this but you will get over it. Best wishes to you and your family.
|
detectives dont do insurance losses jdc its up to your assesor to decide whether he writes them as stolen/recovered or has them valeted and checked at your agreement
|
Have been away for a few days and only just seen this. What an utterly, utterly dreadful thing to happen! Puts my annoyance at the theft of the Mondeo's number plates plast week bang into perspective, and having a wife any young son myself I can all too easily see myself in jdc's position.
jdc, I hope you and your family recover from this well.

i spent £400 today on more locks and better all round security on the house.
someone is coming around tommoroww to put some special film on the patio doors to stop them breaking so quickly. i saw a test and they let me throw a heavy brick at the window several times and it would not break.
money well spent
|
bigbirdy
Could you enlighten me on the film for the patio doors ? Is this easily available, do you know the name of the supplier, rough cost ???
Cheers

i went through my brothers company o will know more in the morning when he comes.
the stuff i saw today was at his offices and is a thin sheet about 1-2mm that gets stuck on the outside with some special adhesive and heated slightly then is supposed to repel a paving slab being thrown 3-4 times at the same place and if does braek will stay intact so the window can be pushed out in one peice. my brother is paying for the film and instalation but i'll ask the fitter in the morning if he has a copy of the invoice.
i'll do a google later and see what's about.
i really wanted electric shutters on all downstairs windows and doors but it was over 4k and after this summer with entertaining the children im nearly skint.
i also was told that it can be added to cars as well. im looking at having it done but also want to find a company that can maybe put some matting in the door casings to deter knives etc coming into the cabin through the door skins.
|
JDC,
I don't know if you remember but you very kindly offered to take me out in your Legacy when I was pondering buying one and we're only a couple of miles away from you so I felt particular horror when reading this. You struck me as a very decent, level-headed bloke and as you have written above they were interested in the cars not you so putting those two things together I'm certain that you will be able to put this behind you sooner than you think and your family can get back on an even keel. We were turned over twice in a fortnight last year, thankfully on nothing like the scale that you have endured and we now have a dog. My wife who is a criminal barrister and so speaks to scrotes of every stripe is convinced from their comments over the years that a set of fangs is the best deterrent. (Certainly works for her...)
|
Nsar
I do remember of course.
I thought you might post at some stage on this thread bearing in mind our proximity.
At this stage, I take some sort of comfort from the fact they were only after the cars - not me, not my wife, not my son - just the cars.
We are getting back on track but a few hurdles to come
Not sure about a dog though - had one before but was not able to look after it properly.

My mad Springer sleeps in the back of the Landie......we only drag it in in winter. It is a very efficient organic alarm, it can literally smell trouble a mile off...he's already seen off one attempted theft a couple of years ago..he nearly had the local beat Officer as well but that was another story.
|
Bigbirdy,
Did you get the details of the security film ?
|
'Stolen/Recovered' would have been marked on the Police National Computer. In the circumstances I doubt that inf would be on the insurance databases such as HPI. But I stand to be corrected.

i know a trader sold an ex stolen recovered metro a few years ago that hadnt been cleared from the police computer, this used to happen a lot as we didnt have things like the abi back then, the new owner spent a night in the cells
|
I've seen that security film before, but can't for the life of me remember which company supplied it. I remember being impressed at how ubreakable it made the glass though!
If I had a flasher car that didn't have a thin piece of cloth for a roof I would consider it, however, in my one "dodgy" experience I found hoofing the throttle and powersliding away from the situation worked better (and would have looked much cooler too if only I could have gotten it on CCTV!)

Thanks - being looking worriedly at my Patio doors today.

that post has probably made us all review our security......
|
Thanks for that link bigbirdy
However at the bottom of that page, it says they don't supply to residential/domestic buildings.
Do you have a contact at this company who would be able to quote us ?
Just as a brief update, considering there was so musch response to my original post :-
Son is fine now and showing no signs of stress.
My wife is having a few days off work but should be OK next week.
I'm fine and back at work
The insurance is working it's own way out - taking time but getting there.
Both cars now in repair garages
Will seem like it was all a dream (nightmare ?) shortly......
Many thanks

my brother is away on business tell 21st and he set it up because his friend owns the securuty company and owed my brother a favour.
i'll see if i can email brother and get some info, but there should be other companies doing the same stuff.
years ago i did see similar stuff for diy fitting but my memory fails. I'll keep checking on google and see what turns up.

Whether related but on BBC North West Tonight a gang arrested that have done 40-48 armed robberies in 12 months. Arrests in Longsite/Levenshulme/Gorton area.
It was a bit of a surprise to see a local "coffee shop/restaurant" called the Orangery where they robbed earlier this year (heard something). They used a cattle prod on the employee!
Apparently robberies included breaking into houses for keys to cars which have then been used for robberies.

Is this posting OK with a court case coming up?

Happy for discussions to be general, I'm going to hide one post though. Keep it general guys.

Apparently quite a few Americans have a panic room, with supplies inside. Although it is unlikely to happen again, one option is to have one room with a door that can withstand an attack from thugs, and a phone inside of course. They'll get your possessions but not you, assuming you are awake when they enter.
I don't know if having an alarm to make massive amounts of noise, or even speakers to announce to the world that the house is under attack is sensible, or just plain daft. It might unnerve the thugs enough to get them to scarper faster.
Several decades ago I went on holiday to Rome, staying in their friend's house. He had a scruffy old car despite being quite a big figure in the film industry.
|
"one option is to have one room with a door that can withstand an attack from thugs"
Most people have. It's called the front door.
|

I'm sure you know what I meant. But I also understand the meaning of your posting, and yes it is incredibly shocking that armed thugs would have broken their way in to a family home with people inside.
