Just suffered an engine cut out. The AA recovery suggested it could be diesel pump or pick up pump issues.
Any thoughts or comments or anybody with previous experience.

What engine? GM or Isuzu?
What cc? What year?
|
Hi there to Screwloose,
It's an Isuzu, with 1686cc, reg'd in Nov'03
Thanks.

As always; many possibilities and a code read is the next step, but the pump-mounted high-voltage ECU [not the main one on top of the engine] has a nasty tendency to crack solder joints. [Could it be because it's mounted on the pump?]
If it's stored "spill valve" codes and you can get it raised; unplug and unbolt the oblong pump ECU and prize the back off. The cracked joints are usually in the middle and are easy to re-solder. [Thus saving the £1700 a new pump costs.]
|
Yes,have to agree with above. The pump controller bolted to the back of the engine with 4 10mm bolts is a constant cause of breakdown on these and is usually repairable by re-soldering cracked joints.A new unit is about £600;I would like to know how GM arrive at this sort of price for such an unreliable piece of electronics which has obviously had inherent faults since design.

Thanks screwloose,
Will investigate further, any ideas on approximate time as this will be passed over to my mechanic, an autoelectrician?
Thank you in anticipation.
|
It's not particularly difficult; an hour or two usually covers it.
Bear in mind that this is all speculative until that code-read is done.
|
you dont always get a spill valve code register in the pump ecu however if you have a donor ecu that you can plug in and give it a try, these pumps are not coded to an idividual car so if you can find someone with the same vehicle give it a try,try the local main dealer mechanics, most of them will have a "spare" ecu that they plug in to try, they may be encouraged to hire it to you for a few beer tokens, failing that bba-reman do recond ecus and last night there was one on ebay

The engine cut out has returned. Previously we have replaced the ECU and also the alternator and that seems to have worked, it has now returned and it seems to appear approx 15 / 20 miles after a cold start. If then left for say 6/10 mins it will restart, sometimes with a battery booster. The battery and alternator have been checked and found to be satisfactory. Desperately need help in resolving this, any advice or suggestions will be welcomed and most appreciated.

Which ECU did you replace - the one on the top of the engine or the one bolted to the injection pump?
|
Screwloose ~ it is bolted to the injection pump. Strange thing also happened is the filters for diesel, air and pollen were changed and it cut out shortly after ... now having additional problem as they are having difficulty in starting it and that's before they source the problem for cutting out! ... any suggestions would be welcomed and appreciated.

Then there's a very good chance that the fuel filter didn't seal correctly and air has got into the pump - not nice to get rid of on those pumps.
