Ive got a mk4 Gt TDi 130 ( PD ) which has always run well, nothing major...apart from the airbag light being on ( o/s seat - cable cut)
Went for a run last night, only to see the glow plug light flashing, and "engine workshop" displayed on the info panel..........
any idea's - or common causes......
TIA

Was there any drop in performance, or unusual noises from the engine to accompany the light flashing? Was the temp gauge reading normally? Any other warning lights (battery, oil etc) lit up at the same time?
If the performance dropped off sharply, it implies the ECU's put the engine in "limp home" mode, and this is usually due to turbo overboost ... which in turn is caused by the boost control valve failing, a vacuum pipe getting disconnected or the VNT mechanism sticking.
If not, then it's almost certainly a dicky sensor somewhere on the engine, which a dealer will need to diagnose.

wow, that was easy to put right....
my mate has just started his own little garage outfit....but he's good with diag.......And, turns out my "engine fault" was infact......wait for it......
......
the brake light switch.
quick clean of the contacts, a code reset, and job done.

This is a common problem,so get the switch replaced otherwise the fault will return. Also, whoever fits the switch make sure they know the correct procedure for installation otherwise you will be fitting at least 2!!hth

On the Golf when the brake light switch under the brake peddle fails, your glow plug light will flash while driving. If you switch the engine off then back on,the engine will still sense a fault after aroung a minute and start to flash again. You can then with help or in the reflection of a mirror see that the lights (all 3) will not light up when pressing the peddle.
Buy a brake peddle switch cost from around 6/15 pound.
The long stalk on the switch on the new will be extended
Remove covers under the dash remove dissconnect old switch and remove from bracket. easy!
Compare the switch with the new,you will see that by pushing the stalk down(on the new one)until it clicks its now the same length as the old one.
Replace into the bracket BUT this is where it seems to cause confusion, when you think its fitted you need to turn it slightly more as inside the switch its on a cam this mates up the parts inside you will here it click into position.
Test the lights all 3 will work.
If the brake lights are all lit the switch hasnt moved on its cam and clicked into position so swist it slightly more.
Sounds a easy job which it is! but to find out about the bit of extra movement to move the cam part took a few phone calls to a VW mechanic friend to find out.
Glow plug Warning light will still flash on the dash dont worry after a few stops /starts in will reset itself.

Hello, did this sort out the problem with your air bag light coming on too?
Thanks
