Starting to plan next year's holiday to South of France.

Is there anywhere that I can get an accurate calculation of the Toll charges I will incur going from Calais to Med?

Try www.viamichelin.com this site will work out routes and give fuel and toll charges.
I have very recently used it for a trip from Calais to Brittany and found the information very accurate.

Try these for size....

www.Autoroutes.fr & www.sanef.com both are the official route toll info sites.

of use may be www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/ a site set up by the Government to tell you the cheapest places to fill up.

Regards and have a safe trip Paul

Sanef have now FINALLY, set up a UK website where you can register really simply, for the chip that allows you to drive through the autoroute toll booths without stopping. See www.saneftolling.co.uk

Thanks for the Sanef link tip (www.saneftolling.co.uk/). I drive to or through France a few times a year and have been stuck in many a toll booth traffic jam - one was in excess of one and a half hours!!

I learnt long ago that the best way was to approach the CB/credit card lanes but I always looked on enviously at the empty "T" lanes.

I have one of these toll tags, very useful, but they do charge €2 per month fee in any month the tag is used.

Funny thing is since getting the tag I've never been caught in any delays at the toll booths.... but it's great to have if only because you don't need to reach over to the other side of the car to pay the toll!!

Nice one ...

Off to Le Tour next Friday and as the first 5-days are taking place in the Vendee & Brittany this will be most useful for scooting about although I have already plotted most of our journeys on Michelin maps – with Post-it Notes!

French autoroute toll charges are a rip off. If you live in France and have to use them regularly, you pay far more each year in charges than you pay in the UK in road tax

My monthy bill with SANEF is rarely below E50 a month. Yes you need the Telepage solely to beat the queues at peak times. It is worth its weight in gold.

I drove to Normandy with my new SANEF toy. I was a bit nervous when approaching the first barrier - but beep and up it went - saving my a good 20minute queue - great stuff!!

I will be back in France soon driving much further south on the last Saturday in August - hell on earth last time I did this. Hopefully the Telepeage device will help with the Journey.

Yes indeed, it is an excellent toy. But the UK motorist pays more than the French motorist - the monthly handling fee (only charged when used) is higher for the units purchased in the UK.

There is no choice about it, as it seems all UK based drivers will have to move to the UK sourced devices in the next year or so.

And remember - if the roads are very busy you may not avoid queues, if the T lane has a queue you will be caught up in it, just this lane will move more quickly than the other lanes.

There is also a small currency exchange charge that does add up, much cheaper using my Nationwide credit card.

Still prefer much reduced queueing time and er indoors not getting upset when I don't stop close enough to be able to insert a credit card without half climbing out of the window - anything for an easier life!

You're right there, I drove to Perpignon a couple of years ago and spent around 100Euro return. If I'd spent this to do 1400 miles on the Uk motorways my yearly TAX bill based on 'then' prices would be around £1000 !!

Yeah but its worth it as the roads are so much better. Plenty of Aire's unlike the UK and the roads are so much smoother. At least you get what you pay for and dont forget fuel is cheaper. WE were paying e1.26ltr for diesel in the Pyrenees equivelent to £1.06 lts whereas at home I'm paying £1.42 ltr

Now over 12000 miles @26mpg average fuel will cost me £691.46 less per year so i always think the tolls and the fuel about balance each other out ! so If I actually did 20 k per year the figures speak for themselevs ! 500-1000 year in tolls is still good value as long as the fuel stays cheaper.

There are various detours you can do to travel on different routes where there are no charges
