In follow on mode from the ?small people reaching controls ? thread?, do you suit the car you drive?.
Are you a ?tall Guy? driving a mini with your head stuck out of the sun-roof, or are you ?dwarfish? person peering through the spokes of a ?Jags? steering wheel?.

To start it off, I?m 5ft 7in, but just try to bully me when I?m in(used to be ) my Tonka!!

6' 2", 21 stone(!), drive 2000 Nissan Primera. Pretty much the right size for me.

Other car is a Daewoo Nubira (Vauxhall Astra clone with a boot -- Belmont??), and I've had Vauxhall Cavalier, Ford Escort, couple of Nissan Sunnys and a Hyundai Accent.

Won't touch little cars, I look silly in them.

Drive Renault Megane, suits me just fine, really comfortable seats. Good range of adjustments on the seats. Don't like any small car, just don't feel safe. I like some good amount of metal around me.

Well now we know who ate all the pies Jase.....

I'm 6 ' 1" and 15 1/2 stone with a 'bad back 'and I fit into the Accord very nicely .Comfort when driving is a priority for me .

My late father in law was 5 ' 2 " and when I first met him he drove a Humber Super Snipe, peering through the steering wheel..

Anyone remember the Dave Allen sketch where he was face to face in his car with a Mini and neither would back up. He got out to threaten the Mini driver by shaking his fist . The Mini door opened and out came the chap who at the time was Britains tallest man over 7 ft. I 've no idea how he fitted himself in there.

I don't understand why people drive cars that don't fit them.

At 6'1" I'm above average height, but not excessively. In the '80s/'90s I had great difficulty in finding cars from volume manufacturers with sufficient headroom and/or legroom. A Rover SD1 was pitifully lacking in both dimensions but the ubiquitous Cavalier mks 2 & 3 were fine.

I have a simple rule when assembling a car purchase shortlist - sit in one in the showroom, if the seat doesn't go far enough back or down then cross it of the list. Once the shortlist is done, I then have to go back with my wife, who's 5'3", and make sure the seat goes forward and up enough for her - thank goodness most cars nowadays have height/reach adjustable syteering wheels.

At an average 6'0, and weighing an average 13 stone, I'm ideally suited to my averagely bland car - the good old Almera (with factory-fitted "sports" seats which manage to hug my not-very-wide body and are extremely comfortable). The only cars I've driven in which discomfort was an issue were a Renault Clio (03) and a Vauxhall Vectra B. More due to poor seats than car size. I get away with driving small & big cars without looking stupid fortunately!
does you fit wot you drives? - DP
6'2", 17 stone, no problem in either Scenic or Mondeo, or our old Fiesta (although the back was a struggle).

1st car was an original Mini, and had no problem in that either.

The only car I've ever had a problem with is SWMBO's old Peugeot 106 because I could press all three (badly offset) pedals at the same time with one foot! Still managed ok though.

I'm 6'4" and about 18 stone. If find a lot of cars a bit 'tight' - but its getting in and out that causes the difficulty. For example an FTO actually fits me quite nicely, but I have to huff and puff getting in and out, and twisted my knee doing so when I was doing some work on one a couple of months back.
I can't really get into a Smart Roadster (I have tried!) and I look after an Ultima - which is also near impossible for me to climb into.

6'2" 90kg

Never had a problem with headroom in any car I've ever owned, even the low XJS had 6 inches to spare. Always set the seat as high as poss too to rest my thighs.

The 406 is ok but just isn't long enough when the child seats are being used so have to scrunch up a bit.

The 605 was inch perfect in every dimension, regret selling it.

My Polish B-I-L Mariusz is the biggest human I've ever seen, well over 2m tall, makes me look like a little schoolboy. He was driving a Cinqueciento?? when we first met and seemed to fit ok.

I hate sitting in the back of cars. Unless I can stretch out Chaise Longue style.

6'0" - and just under 12 stone - I have driven the 405 for 12 hours in a day, and it's fine. I find that SWMBO's Focus is not as good, specifically it does not have good lower back support.

about 6' to 6'2" depending on the day, about 95kgs.

The MX5 is fine, can even climb over to the passenger side with the roof on to get out when parking in the garage. Another couple of inches of legroom would be nice, but it's comfy enough.

The C4 is great, lots of room - the Fabia equally so.

istr that my sister's Panda from way back had acres of room in it, and I was surprised how much space there was in the Mini *(no capitals). Both were fine for me to drive.

on the other hand, i always feel cramped in the f-i-l's XJ, seems a big car with not really all that much interior space, especially in the back.
Do you fit what you drive? - jase1
That's strange because I got a lift in an MX5 once, and found it to be like a dinky toy inside, nowhere near enough space in any direction.

I found the same thing with the Nissan Cedric and Toyota Corona taxis they have in the land of the rising sun...
Do you fit what you drive? - Citroënian {P}
with all the respect due to a bigger chap though, you are a _little_ bigger than me so perhaps that's why the MX5 wasn't quite so good a fit!

It would be nice to be a little bigger, but no real problems doing 4 or 5 hour trips in it for me

5'9" and the Accord fits brilliantly - the work they have done with Shukra on the seats is fantastic - can drive it non-stop for hours without any signs of being uncomfortable.

For some reason I cannot get a comfortable driving position in that car and I have used all the 'experts guides' on setting th edriving position.

I saw your post on the other thread an wondered how you managed in an MX-5. Your knees must be up next to your hands aren't they?

I'm an average 5'9" (and a half!) and 15 stone. When I drive my g.f's MX-5 I think I have the seat one notch from fully back to be comfortable. Suppose it depends on the recline position of the backrest?

A rugby player mate of mine is 6'5" and used to weigh 24 stone, he used to have a bit of trouble getting into some cars. He used to think his Renault 19 was a bit cramped for him. He's trimmed down a bit now though to about 19 stone and is currently okay in his Passat estate.
His Dad is even bigger, 6'6" and looks like he weighs about 30 stone. On his last car (Scorpio) he broke the seat twice and had to have the seat frame welded up!

Interesting you should mention location - it was me writing "average 6'0". I used to live in Bournemouth where I considered myself above average height, and in London I'm certainly above average height - standing on the platform at Temple tube station last year I felt like Gulliver travelling through Lilliput! However up here in deepest County Durham, most are 6' plus - many are a good 3 or 4 inches taller than me! I don't object to posting a picture of my Almera, but my face is equally bland and ordinary-looking!

I'm 5' 7" - average size body, shorter-than-average legs - and in 40 years of driving have never had a problem getting comfortable in a car, even though for the first 25 or so of those years all the adjustment you had was fore-and-aft movement of the seat.......

......Until recently, test driving a BMW 320d. To be able to depress the clutch fully I had to be much too near to the steering wheel. An automatic would have avoided the problem, but that was a real slug. The manual had a notchy and stiff gearchange and a heavy clutch - so no thanks.

I'm 6' 5" and used to be 146kg in my lifting days - a long, long, time ago. [And on a planet far, far, away...]

Breaking seats [even driving them clean through the floor in my souped Mini van] was a constant problem. Only the big Rovers and Beemers seemed to fit nicely.

After having to give up the lifting; I got into slimming instead and lost half of it [73kg] over two years for a laugh - it was too much like hard work to stay there though, so I'm back into the 90's.

I can, just, get into an Elise; but it's mainly Japanese and Italian cars that don't fit - particularly those with low sunroofs!

Considering how good multi-adjustable, gas damped, truck seats are, from the likes of Isringhausen and Bostrom, car makers could do a lot more for those outside the 95th percentile.

Unless it's a truck cab; move the backrest support back a tad. It worked for me on my old Safari, even when I was big.

[After 22 years; the seat kinda moulded [mouldered?] to fit like an old glove. Surprisingly comfortable driving position - and big steel pedals very suited to size 13 safety boots.

Should never have got rid of the old girl. Modern stuff has no character.

The tyre industry uses imperial for rim diameter, metric for width and ratio for profile height.

Back on topic, 1.97m, 83.9 kg, Suzuki Swift. My previous car was a Seat Ibizia. Both had height adjustable seats. Legroom isn't a problem - my legs bend at the knee. Headroom is what I look for in a car. Sunroofs are a no-no, except in my old 1988 Saab 900. The Citroen BX was right out.

I think that the overall height and size are relevant, but also the relative lengths of the trunk, arms and legs. I am 5'8" tall, but have much shorter legs than my wife, who is 5'4" tall. So I have to have the seat much further forward, and then the backrest much more reclined. Mostly drive Mitsubishi Galant Estate (Legnum VR-4), Series III XJ12 and occasionally original Mini.
does you fit wot you drives? - Brian Tryzers
Fascinating thread, and good to see plenty of others here to offer a view from beyond the 95th percentile.

One thing I don't understand, though: the number of people who - from my point of view - are merely at the upper end of 'typical', by which I mean up to about 1.9m / 6'3", yet who still claim to push the seat back as far as it will go. I've tried a fair few smallish, medium and largish cars in the last ten years, and found only two - Grande Scénic and Golf Plus - that didn't give me enough legroom to drive comfortably. In most of the others, if I use all the available seat travel, I can barely reach the pedals, let alone the steering wheel. And I'm 1.98m / 6'5".

The bit that bugs me is this: if there are so many men about with legs longer than mine, how is it that when I go shopping for trousers, the longest anyone has in stock have 34" legs? I'm not proud enough of my socks to want to show off that much of them!
does you fit wot you drives? - PoloGirl

Same with women and size 6 shoes - everyone else got there first!
does you fit wot you drives? - GregSwain
34" legs are considered long by anyone's standards! My legs are only 31-32", which is considered average. Shoes, however, are a pain. Being size 12, I walk past the plethora of size 10's, and the slightly more limited selection of 11's, to be faced with a handful of pairs that fit, and don't look like I'm wearing a pair of matching canoes. That's life unfortunately!
does you fit wot you drives? - reevsie
6' 6" & 19 stone. Not only does the height dictate what I can drive , but also shoe size. I have quite wide size 13 feet so although I can fit quite comfotably into my mums fiat punto, the pedals are too close together. I have a 406 and a rover 414 and when I drive the rover my head rubs against the roof lining and gives me a nice static shock when I get out of the car. The high clutch pedal on the 414 is also a pain. the 406 is quite comfortable. I'm amazed that other guy can fit into a mx5, i could only get my legs into it if I left the drivers door open.
does you fit wot you drives? - GregSwain
reevsie, I also can't drive cars with the pedals too close together - I learnt in a Pug 206 and I would've failed my test had I been asked to perform an emergency stop. I couldn't physically stamp on the brake without catching either the clutch or (more often) the accelerator. For normal braking I had to use the very tip of my toe.

5ft 8in and around 9 stone. Rarely find anything I don't fit at mid range of adjustments, can happily drive Xantia, Berlingo and prev BX/205 combo as long as is safe without getting aches etc. SWMBO (5ft 2in but much shorter in the leg than me) usually just has to move seat and adjust mirrors on a driver change, though she does suffer from stiffness and "twitchy legs".

I'v learned to ride the eponymous bike with it's saddle fully raised (slightly easier than fiddling to get it 25mm shorter where it's ideal).

Seriously, raw height can be pretty misleading. Swmbo's sister and their uncle are much the same size seated side by side; when they stand and he unfolds his legs he's all but a foot taller.
