My 2000 A6 2.8 is going for a 'tween services oil change on Wednesday at a local independent. They say they use fully synthetic 5W-30.
I know this has been done to death on the site but I struggle to understand oil specifications.
Is 5W-30 ok for this car ?

If the car is on long life service schedule (18000 miles +) then it is the correct oil. If it is on regular 12000 mile changes IIRC you only need semi-synthetic.

It's not on the long life service schedule but I don't mind using better than specified oil. I just don't want to use poorer than specified. Thanks.
Incidentally the independent - which came recommended by a work colleague if that means anything - charges £50 for oil, filter and labour and includes a levels check on everything else. I thought that not unreasonable given that the franchise agent wants almost £200 for the same job.

£200 is really taking the mick for the 5 minute job of removing filter, drain, new filter, fill with oil, plus say 5 minutes for checking other fluids.

I tend to agree, as it's DIY-able for £20 plus half an hour of your valuable time. £50 is what I'd expect from a decent independent.

Why don't you check that the oil proposed meets the relevant VW specification? It will be in the book - although don't expect anything by way of information to be a model of clarity from VAG.
VAG oil specs usually start 50xx.xx (My engine uses 506.01 or 507.00 for its particular lifestyle).
659.

It's not unknown for Audi's which have been run on semi-synthetic to be switched to full synthetic to suddenly start using loads of oil because they spec of the oil is in fact thinner at certain temperature than was available when the engine was designed.
It is a not uncommon problem on A8's. I'd stick to the original spec personally.

It's not unknown for Audi's... . semi-synthetic to be switched to full synthetic ... using loads of oil ...... spec of the oil is thinner .....
oh no, is that myth still doing rounds?
