Please can anyone help?
Without going to the expense of buying a Haynes manual, does anyone know how to remove the alt. belt on a non power steering, non air con MkIV 1.25 Fiesta (97),
Can't find any adjustment on Alternator, it looks like the tensioning wheel/pulley is unbolted and then belt taken off or is it more complex than that?
Thanks

If it's the same as the PAS equipped 1.4 we had, you have to put a spanner on the centre nut of the tensioner pulley and rotate it clockwise (as if you're tightening the bolt). This pushes the tensioner back against its spring pressure, and lets the belt be slipped of the pulleys. The alternator is fixed in one position, as is the PAS pump (when fitted), so no movement here.
The tensioner spring is quite strong, and it takes some effort, but it should move.
It's much easier to refit the belt with two people - one to hold the tensioner back, and the other to route the belt and sit it on the pulleys. When you release the spanner, the tensioner will spring back and automatically tension the belt.
HTH!
Cheers

Thanks DP.
There is probably only going to be me doing this job, so will start on weight training to try to build up hand strength ASAP.
Cheers.

My Xantia has this automatic spring loaded tensioner system. It has the facility to wind the tensioner back and insert a pin through a hole in the arm and its bracket to hold it clear while the belt is removed/replaced. It may be worth looking for a similar arrangement.
