I've bought an Astra H 1.8 automatic 55 plate via Network Q. I'm new to Vauxhalls so I'm
not sure of a rattle on startup, it comes from the offside of the engine where I think the belts
would be. After a few miles the sound disappears, I thought it could be something running
short of oil at startup. Can anyone help with this ?

Without hearing the rattle, a total guess would be a loose cambelt. As the engine warms up, metal expands and thus takes up any slack in the belt. Another guess is the wrong grade oil used, or a faulty oil filter. If the garage where you bought it from is any good, they should offer to keep the car overnight and hear the noise for themselves when they start it up in the morning.
Net-Q is usually a top warranty, but only if the garage you're using are any good.

I reckon DD is on the right track. A few seconds of rattle after a cold start is not uncommon as the hydraulic tappets repressurise, but using the correct low viscosity oil and manufacturers oil filter should minimise this. If the noise takes a few miles to go it is something more significant - or a very faulty hydraulic tappet.
