Getting across the Channel - mike hannon
I'm considering doing a Blighty run from France for the first time in quite a while. I want to avoid the Channel Pirates if I can but a western crossing would suit me, so - does anyone have any recent experience of the ferry that replaced P and O on the Portsmouth-Le Havre route? LD Lines I think? Had a quote from them through Ferrysavers for 169 sterling for a 16-day return, which didn't seem bad.
After what happened to us last time SWMBO doesn't really fancy taking even the Prelude to the UK so I looked at car hire rates on the Ryanair site. Apparently, even with a collision damage waiver, I would still be liable for the first 550 pounds of any damage to a rental car unless I take out 'super' insurance cover. Is this the norm?

I have used LD Lines several times now. The P&O Pride of LH and Pride of Portsmouth were better ships but at a much higher cost. I would recommend LD Lines without hesitation.

The problem for you is they only have a late afternoon crossing from France - 5pm. So you will end up in Portsmouth about 10pm UK time. So depending on your destination you may have to have a night in a hotel.

LD now sail to Newhaven (in the summer, to 30 Sep) from Le Havre as well as to Portsmouth. www.ldlines.co.uk . They also do Dieppe-Newhaven.

Thanks for that. I only have to get to friends in Weymouth so LD looks a good bet.
