followed a big camper van yesterday, instead of the usual smartcar or micra, this one was towing a trike. It got me wondering what the point was:

it's as wide as a car so no use for filtering through traffic.
you sit low down so you get all the fumes
you're exposed to the weather
maybe I'm getting old

Did you not see Mark Evans build a big trike on one of the TV channels?
I don't have one, just a normal bike and a car but can see the attractions being - out in the open with no real need of all the protective gear (maybe goggles advised). Passengers more comfortable and maybe more than one. Some storage space. Not really of interest to me, but possible to many is the pose value, they are generally head-turners.

I think it's also worth mentioning that a lot of trikes are ridden by ex-bikers that now have a disability. I'm sure they would rather be on a bike but no longer are able. A trike is the next best thing for them.

Good luck to them I say, live and let live.

I'd like to know as well.
Most riders seem to be bearded, bald, fat, wearing sunglasses and black leather waistcoats.
And the male riders are even stranger.

I think with some it allows a "wind in face" (and other places) sort of experience, and at the same time a much bigger engine than you could get in a bike - saw one round here not long back which had a Chevy small-block V8 in it. Now THAT was a nice noise although the cornering must have been terrifyingly bad.

Agree with the comments re. disabled bikers, too.

good thing is if you are technically inept you can always wack the front end off an old beetle and weld some handlebars and forks to the front of the back of the flooorpan and voila a trike

gosh i sounded like TVM then with me left right blinkers

and IIRC you do not need to wear a helmet so sort of back to the old days of "freedom?"

passed a guy on the motorway yesterday driving a Caterham 7 type car wearing a full face helmet! No wind in face experience for him; probably sensible but it looked most odd.

i suppose a lot of trikers havnt got car licences so they opt for the next best mode of transport other than a bike, trikes are a bit awkward to start with cause you have to steer them unlike a bike which you can lean

I saw the other day, being towed behind a huge shiny new motorhome, was a very tidy 60's MG of some sort - very cool I thought! DB

motorised; a bright yellow low swoopy thing - seen some before and they tend to have VW engines in the back. Very low, very long and very wide.

Worst of both worlds, all the disadvantages of a car and all the disadvantages of a bike.

Motor tricycles... terminal understeer in the wet at 10mph? The only good three wheelers were Morgan and BSA, and they had the single wheel at the back where it belongs.

Had a ride on a vintage shaft-drive pedal tricycle once that belonged to a collector of chain-drive Frazer Nashes and VSCC stalwart. The thing looked harmless enough but was very heavy indeed to pedal and totally impossible to steer, being able under power to turn one way only, not the other. Couldn't work out why.

The owner was in fits of laughter. He got a lot of innocent pleasure out of watching people try to ride it. Very funny.

I've always liked them, ever since I was a kid, and finally got one last year. It just feels great, that's all! But to go into more detail ...
I like the look of them (when they're the laid-back chopper type, as opposed to those with tiller steering or sports bikes with stabilizers). You can put much bigger engines in, or engines of any type if you want - mine's a diesel! - and obviously a car engine in a light chassis gives massive power-to-weight. Rover V8 engines are a popular choice, but I've sat on one with the engine of a TVR Tuscan and another powered by a unit out of a Honda NSX. I can go away on it and bring changes of clothes, tools, spare fuel (biodiesel) and 18 bottles of beer - the latter is particularly important to a real ale enthusiast in a land of Harp and Bud! All this plus helmets can be securely locked in a top box that isn't out of proportion to the trike body. The wife will come with me too, which is nice - she would never go on a bike. No filtering, sure, but no "Sorry, I didn't see you" either - in fact they're usually staring or waving as I go by. I can take younger nephews and nieces out on it too, without worrying that they'll fall off. Ultimately, they're not that common, and I know there isn't another machine like mine anywhere else in the world.

Hmm - bearded - yes, bald - no, fat - slightly, leather waistcoat - not yet, but riding on a warm day means you don't always want the full jacket on and it's amazing how much of a sting you can get when a stone hits your t-shirt at 70 mph. Sunglasses will usually be wraparound, for the same practical reasons as the ones worn when ski-ing. I always wear my helmet even though it's not a legal requirement - spent too long working with people recovering from brain injury to do any different. No issues with understeer, as long as it's set up right and you don't have ridiculously wide rear tyres.

Main thing though is that it puts a smile on my face that's hard to remove and that's all the reason I need!

can't argue with any of andymc's points or the disabled ex-biker scenario then I came across this:

and am left speechless... :)

Wasn't me guv ... ;-)

I honestly don't get why people do this from time to time, and must admit I have seen worse, much worse! Thankfully these are rare, and at least it looks as though the rear windscreen has been removed to prevent the thing acting as a parachute. But not for me ta.

Quote>The only good three wheelers were Morgan and BSA, and they had the single wheel at the back where it belongs. >>

If there was ever such a thing as a good 3-wheeler, there would be more of the type in production now!
trikes - what's the point? - andymc {P}
Such as Rewaco, Boom, TrikeTec ...

Ultimately it's a minority interest that appeals to enthusiasts. I'm not pretending any different but "if there was ever such a thing as a good 3-wheeler" sounds unnecessarily negative. Horses for courses etc. - I'm not trying to persuade anyone they should get one, just answering the question of why they appeal (to me). Anyway I'm off for a spin ...
