Watched the Tour de France on Sunday in London. There were a lot of French Gendarmes on motor cycles as well as London cops. Without going all "oooh Maureen" and all, I thought the Gendarmes would win any "je ne sais quoi" competition with their tight strides, knee high boots and blue shirts versus hi vis yellow jackets. Vive le difference!
ps. I am only going by what my wife said..... she chases fire engines down the road to catch a glimpse of a fireman!

first if anyone is looking at motorcycle cops and asking the question 'who looks better' then they had better be
a. female
b. fully paid up members of the Blue Oyster Bar.
To answer your question however, French motorcycle cops are incompetent and frequently cause traffic chaos based on my experience of 5 years of living with them (and la tour coming right past my front door for 3 of them).

This thread is being watched...........

better watching the thread than leather clad motorcycle cops surely?
|
|
We were watching the prologue in Whitehall and thought much the same as the OP's wife. French=style!!
First thought on seeing the thread title was Hazel Blears v other Labour motorcyclists!!!
|
And as a PS did anyone else clock the French (or maybe Belgian) motorcycle copper on yesterday's stage doing what Gary Imlach described as the water jump? - bike and rider in a metre deep dyke.

1960s film 'Girl on a motorcycle'
Marianne Faithful
Don't mention Mars bars (I did once but I think I got away with it). OK Mods?

1960s film 'Girl on a motorcycle'
Shudder... one of the worst films of a dire era for British film.

I didn't see any of race, but I wouldn't imagine that there was much in it, now if we were talking Spanish motorcycle cops that would be a different story and they would win hands down if what I saw in Spain was anything to go by :-)
Oldhand - correct, I'm option B, so now we just need some of the few Backroom option A's to join in the debate and everything should be fine for the mods! ;-)

Sure did Bromptonaut - I posted on the 'Deauville' police bike thread yesterday.
It was one of the French gendarme motorcycles - I laughed a lot as he did not seem to have come to any great harm but was very much drowned rat rather than smart gendarme .
Surely that had to be candidate for the ' most likely to happen accident of the month award'
The way the cameramen, police , tour support cars drive etc and the encroaching supporters make the event very dangerous IMO.
There was a bit on More 4 last night about a cycle rider last year who was flattened and had a massive bleeding cut from a large cardboard hand waved by one of the supporters.

It's "Le Tour". A race for men. And pharmacists.

Surely men can appreciate another man looking good, just like women can appreciate other women. Go on Old Hand... join the rest of us in inclusive, broad minded 2007. ;)
Didn't see either of them, but I don't find anyone on a motorbike attractive to be honest.

You're missing out, that's like not enjoying chocolate! ;-)

I am in my 60's but on the bike my missus says I look like a 'twenty something' with all the gear on. The illusion is over when I go to pay for my petrol :)

Keep the illusion going - act like a twenty year old and ride off without paying!

Oh come on. Surely nothing comes close to a US Highway patrol officer of the 70's early 80's. How did they get that shirt and trousers cut so tight? and those boots. I saw an SFPD female officer on a bike. Now that is an image to savour. Pity the bike was a kawasaki!

So, you are saying she was a cracker and the bike was a Kwakker?
I do apologise, I am very, very sorry. I don't know what came over me. I just couldn't resist it.
I am going on holiday now for 10 days, I hope I am better when I get back.

Saw some Sussex Road Rats, Beelzebub's Handmaidens or something of the sort in a quiet pub down there once. The bikers themselves cultivated an unappetising look although their behaviour was inoffensive. But the bikes were terrific, all different, bling-free and painted matt black all over, engine and all.
There's a black biker gang from Harrow or somewhere that I've seen a couple of times too. Eccentric looks but very sprauncy driving for London.
Personally I greatly prefer this stripped down look to US Highway Patrol bikes that look as if they weigh more than a small car, and their riders got up as fascist generals or West End doormen.

Electra Glide in Blue - Cracking film - I nearly wanted one when I first saw it.
|
Yes it is a good movie PU, excellent. Those bikes are enormous great whales though.
|
Don't know about the Police uniforms, but when we saw a pair of Harleys cruise up The Strip in Vegas, with their 'rough rider', appearence on their gleaming machines, complete with neon lighting, sparkling in the chrome & park up, ouside the Harley Davidson Cafe, even I had to go & take a look & some fotos (of the bikes!!)
Very cool dudes, as a teenager might say!
