My Passat has started to "hesitate" at low revs - 1500 to 2000 ish. It feels like maybe it's not firing on all cylinders briefly. The exhaust seems dirtier, I think fuel consumption has got slightly worse and wife reckons there's a whistle from the engine on the driver's side that wasn't there before (my ears aren't up to it). Any ideas? It goes in on Thursday for a "diagnostic". I'm hoping for a nice cheap, dropped off / split pipe. Oh - 46k miles.

Thanks,
JH

The possibilities are 1) Sticking EGR valve 2) MAF sensor becoming faulty or 3) Induction air leak in some of the piping from the turbo thro the intercooler to the inlet manifold.
Checking 1 is tricky and probably best left to a garage if you are not confident.
Item 2 is easy to check, just unplug the MAF (connector near air filter box). Pull this plug and see how the car drives, if there is little or no difference this is the fault and it is very easy to replace yourself (costs about £60 from Ebay or Eurocarparts).
Item 3 is just a question of using a torch and the MK1 eyeball, possibly using an assistant to rev the car while you are looking for the leak.

If the cars booked in for a diag then leave it alone, everytime you unplug a sensor you will create a fault code and just make finding the fault more difficult / costly

This is true, I was just discussing options you could do yourself before you get your credit card out.

But its booked in tomorrow and the more he fiddles the more codes will be saved......Times money.....

Thanks guys. Given the whistling noise reported by wife I'm hoping for a nice, cheap split pipe. I'll report back.

Full marks and virtual pints all round. A great big split in a pipe attached to the turbo. By this morning the car had gone past it's interpretation of a corporation bus and was looking more like destroyer laying down smoke.
Thanks,
