Engine has slight mis-fire, which hasn't gotten any worse for about 6K miles. AS it is now due for a major service anyway I want to change plugs before changing anything else. Currently running Bosch Super 4 (FR78X I think), but have been told that these are prone to causing mis-fire as some can fail early (?). Does anyone have experience of this and what other plugs (NGK Model?) are recommended for the non turbo 1.8 20V Passat

Any misfire is bad news for a catalyst. May be failure time next MOT.
Coils are the usual problem with petrol VAG cars.

I wouldn't use Bosch plugs from choice- I've had a few faulty ones and some of my garages refuse to fit them as a rule. We get very few probs with NGK one though

Glakit wee skunner says:
it's usually the coils with VAG. the ADR engine doesn't use the individual coil packs, it uses the dis-unit that covers cylinders 3 & 4, with flying HT leads to 1 & 2. Is it likely to be the Dis-unit or the flying leads. Is it possible to get them tested without having to fork out (the leads are £70 for the pair and the dis unit is £200 +) As it hasn't got any worse for 7K + miles I'm not sure if it's any of the above. Also the timing belt was changed around the same time, if the belt is out by 1 tooth would this cause the same mis-fire/ lumpy runningproblem?
Any help appreciated.

Use the Bosch original equipment (OE) spec plug which is FR7LDC+.
The FR78X's are the much rationalised/compromised Super 4 range that everyone is wowed by the four earth electrode design.
