I can't see OLDER MESSAGES if I am in COLLAPSE THREAD mode. Is this a permanent change as I presume it isn't my machine playing up?

Try going into last thread on page, click on previous topic, click on go to topic, brings me to the previous page, with an older messages link.

To all:
There is a known issue with this version.
If threads are deleted, in this case two, it has a number of effects.
Every thread below where the deleted thread was, slips its reply count and its new flag a line. If two htreads are deleted, it slips two lines, etc.
In addition, until the position where the deleted threads were has moved off the front page, then it will not show the older topics button. It will forever happen on the page which holds the ex-position of those deleted threads, however far back it gets.
Bogush gave you the easiest way around it if you want to look at older threads.

How about Martyn putting something in place of the threads when he deletes them, will that keep everything aligned?
