My daughters K plate polo handbrake has progresively been in need of adjustment (its now at the end of its adjustment on the threaded rod at the handbrake end of the cable. This problem I thought was curred when I replaced all three cables(due to cable stretch) last year. Its had new rear brake shoes new adjuster wedges and springs-the adjusters are working.I have also checked that the drums are within their wear tolerance So Iam stumped at present as to why so much adjustment is nesessary so often. She does tend to yank the handbrake up tight a bit more than is necessary so could it be just cable stretch again? I also checked that the hole in the tunnel where the cable comes through from under the car has not deformned.
So need a few suggestions please.

Were the parts used genuine or pattern?
It could possibly be that the new parts you have weren't made to the correct specs and as a result they are not working as well as originally planned.
TBH I'm stumped if that's not the answer as you have covered all the other bases I would advise you check!
Hope you find out the reason soon.

>>Were the parts used genuine or pattern?
The cables were from europarts, but other bits were genuine .We have another Polo with relaced cables from europarts, the hanbrake works just fine on this one and does not require constant adjustment. The only difference I can find between the two polo's is the faulty one has the handbrake mounted .75 inches more towards the rear of the car (cannot be moved as mountings welded to the tunnel). But this would not explain the constant adjustment required its as if the cable just keep stretching or the outer sheaf is compressing.

If the shoes are correctly adjusted I would say the cables are the wrong ones.
Have you checked the outer sheath is resting in its mounting ok behind the backplate

The cable adjusted ok when first fitted its just needs adjusting over aperiod of time (8 months or so ) So to me it indicates that something is streaching or moving.so could be a faulty cable but not necessarily the wrong one.

Sure the adjuster is not undoing itself over time, usually once H/cable is adjusted you can forget for a while, problem would be adjusters need looking at every 6 months as they really should be IMO.
Not once adjusted then forgotten (as I`ve never seen self adjusters that work)

I locked the adjuster by running another nut up behind the original so definately not undoing, I agree needs adjusting for normal wear ect but not in 8 months from working ok (about 4 clicks on hand brake to max approx 9 cilcks)

Sorry, I meant the shoe adjusters not handbrake

>>Sorry, I meant the shoe adjusters not handbrake
The shoe adjusters are a serated wedge(replaced with new springs) pulled down by a spring, if you remove one wheel nut you can insert a long thin tool and check that the wear in the shoes has been taken up by puling the wedge down, but in my case the adjuster is adjusted up to where it should be.The serations and the spring prevent it slipping back.I still think its cable stretch caused by my over strong armned daughter.

Check the handbrake mouning bracket where it attaches to the floor pan. One on my kids polos fracture all round the mounging and eventually broke off completely. I bet you daughter does not press the button in either to avoid that nasty rachet noise. Regards Peter

>>Check the handbrake mouning bracket where it attaches to the floor pan
Hi Peter yes did that thats when I discovered the .75 mounting position differences between the two polo's, but definately secure and no exsesive wear in the ratchet mechanism yet!
Bit of a mysterm especially as its over 8 months so somethings on the move gradually.
