A lot of villages on main roads in our area have speed cameras. Locals who know the road tend to ignore the 30 limits, braking for the cameras and then accelerating away from them.
But one village I've been going through recently has two cameras, one about one third of the way through, the other two-thirds. Most vehicles seem to keep more or less to the 30 limit. So I wonder if having 2 cameras makes drivers think 'It's easier to just keep to 30 rather than worry about the 2 cameras.

Years ago (before scameras) Strathclyde police would set up speed traps about a mile apart on Great Western Road when it was a 30mph 6 lane dual carrigeway.
The second trap was always very busy!

I've quit often seen the scamera 'bike' set up about 200 yards from the normal van position. It is much less conspicuous than the van with just a little sign set up and the bike could almost be called 'hidden' behine a phone box.

IMO the only effective speed cameras are the average speed ones, which in effect are [as a minimum] paired.
This type are most often used when motorways are being repaired/upgraded/altered and are the only ones that most people stick to the limit for. The single Gatso type are useless as most people slow down as they pass them and instantly speed up again.
I suspect over time we may see more and more of them.

The flaw with these cameras as used on motorways is that if you lane switch they are useless. Might work better on normal roads though.

In Rochdale there's a road with about 6 cameras along its length and a 30mph speed limit. I have no choice but to do 30 the whole way because I don't drive it enough to know where the cameras are. The locals, however, regularly overtake me and then brake hard for the cameras, which is of course the safety improvement everyone was hoping for... *rolls eyes*
