The car is really running lumpy and is losing power on all gears. Its seems the car is taking about 10 seconds to register that i have my foot to the floor and and is really strugling to get up to speed. The rev counter is a bit eratic on start up and after a minute it sits at normal idle revs.
The exhaust is quite noisey too????

hope someone can help

Fault code time, this sounds like a MAF failure or Throttle Position Sensor I assume the fuel pump sounds healthy. Regards Peter

are the simple to change. do you have an idea of what sort of price would i be looking at?
mk3 golf gti 'lumpy running and power' - adam f
Also whilst driving the car lost power and cut out on two seperate occasions. I pulled over and the car started up straight away. hope this may help peoplke come to there conclusions

are any warning lights on?

What year is it and where does the noise come from?
mk3 golf gti 'lumpy running and power' - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)
Possible that the monolith in the cat is breaking up and blocking the outlet to the cat intermittently, the loss of power would be accompanied by a whooooshing sound from the exhaust. Removing the O2 sensor from the exhaust forward of the cat will allow the gas to escape to prove the point.

no warning lights come on. it is a 93 L registration. I rang a couple of mechanics and gave them the symptoms and they have said it may be the idle control valve as it is also reving iratically.
mk3 golf gti 'lumpy running and power' - adam f
After much research on the web it does sound like its the idle control valve. As the exhaust is really loud to i am assuming its got a hole somewhere so might replace that too. i spoke to 3 mechanics and they all said it does sound like the idle control valve but they would do a diagnostic test first as the parts are very expensive and dont want to waste money.

if anyone has a different view then please let me know, possibly with info on how to rectify.
manythanks for all the responses so far.

Hi
An idle valve woundn't give you lack of power. It only controls your idle. It maybe faulty but it's not just that.

also the car is usinga lot of fuel. Maybe i should change the air flow meter?
mk3 golf gti 'lumpy running and power' - perleman
The symptons you describe sound like air flow meter & maybe more too. Id start by looking at that under the bonet, you can inspect it yourself. If it's filthy or disconnected you will have a clue. My friend's VR6 was a dog but he realised the MAF was disconnected - once connected it was a peach & hasn't gone wrong in a year (96k on the clock when he got it too)

I had something very similar on my MkIV Golf. Basically the cat had broken up and a bit of metal had got stuck in the EGR valve. The car was very noisy as I changed down the gears and it cut out on me at will. Couldn't get it started without having to have the ECU reset because the emissions light was coming on. Needed a whole new exhaust system in the end.

Check the large bore pipe from the air filter to the throttle body is in good condition and is seated propperly (take it off and check for splits / damage) . Also check the breather pipes have'nt rotted out and that they're clipped and well seated (an oily smell in the cabin in traffic is usually a give away for this)

This is how the car is running now.

1 - when i first start the car up, the idle is a little erratic. It should be sitting on 1000rpm, but it goes up to around 2500rpm than goes back down, then up and after about 5 minutes it will sit at normal. whilst sitting in traffic it self revs, anything up to 2000rpmand then down and up etc.

2 - When i am driving and pulling away or changing gears up and down there is a loud noise that seems to to be coming from under the passenger seat. My instinct is that its the exhaust. Its like the air is trying to go through the right places, but not being released.

3 - The car is really using a lot of fuel, and i mean alot. i had half a tank and now its on red and i have only done 100 miles. 70 of that was on the motorway.

4 - The temperature gauge does not move. posibbly the thermostat is broke

The car does not have a air filter and air box. It has a KandN air filter cone, which goes into a bosch or siemens air flow meter.

lots of problems that i need lots of help with

mk3 golf gti 'lumpy running and power' - George Porge
If there is a leak between the MAF and the engine throttle body the maf will not be reading the correct amount of air entering the engine and will not inject the correct amount of fuel. Looking for air leaks wont cost you a penny only time. The popping in the exhaust could be an air being ignited in the exhaust.

Have you bought this POS in this condition? What work has recently been done to the car?
mk3 golf gti 'lumpy running and power' - adam f
I got it from my cousin. The car has been standing for about 6 weeks. My cousin is travelling so i bought it from my aunt for £450.wish i didnt now

Could be the AFM is contaminated with the oil from this filter. Remove the sensor, chuck away the K&N and gently spray carb cleaner through the sensor but do not try and wipe or brush the internal components. If you now see any kind of improvement go to the breakers and try and find a good secondhand unit together with the original air filter box.

Get the cooling system sorted;if the temperature does not rise you're still running on the warm-up fuel setting.I agree ,chuck the k&N and fit the proper system.
mk3 golf gti 'lumpy running and power' - adam f
ok the lumpy running was caused by the K and N filter. i took it off and went for a drive and the car was not loseing any power. I have purchased a used air filter housing from ebay so i will fit that when it comes. i will be getting a new exhaust, including the catalytic converter at the end of the month as i do think the cat has collapsed and is not getting the gases out, and it is really making a terrible noise when i am accelerating hard.
The temp gauge is still on the blink so i have purchased a used sensor thingy, hopefully this willcure the problem.

many thanks to every one who posted, and i wll keep you posted in the future.
