1. How long have you owned this car? Has it ever had an oil change as far as you know?
2. What came out of it? Treacle? What grade of oil was in it before?
3. Have you fitted the correct filter, with a non-return valve fitted, if necessary? etc. etc. etc.
|
what sort of noise? At all speeds?
Have you manged to disturb any hoses pipes etc?
|
hello yorkiebar
what sort of noise? At all speeds?
It was very quiet before with bonnet up at idle and now noisy.

hello bathtub tom

5yrs , yes 2. What came out of it? Treacle? What grade of oil was in it before?
black oil magantec 20/40 3. Have you fitted the correct filter with a non-return valve fitted if necessary? etc. etc. etc.
oil filter unipart wgcgfe489
|
Unipart (good quality but not made by them ) gfe489 is correct filter for the car; so no worries there unless its faulty (very unlikely imo).

Very difficult to advise without hearing the noise (the hardest problem to explain to anybody possibly?)
But I would make a fair bet that you have changed air filter too? If so look around that area, ensure filter cover is back on securely and evenly etc. Any pipes or hoses in that area, just pull them gently to make sure they are secure etc.
Is noise a "roaring" sort of sound or metallic scraping , or rattling or what etc etc.

Not this service every other service .

Did a visual check everything ok . Will check by pulling/pushing again.

A roaring/dull rattling sound ( if that makes sense ? ) coming for top of engine.
|
Roaring type noises generally indicate air flow leak so keep that in mind when looking.
Not left oil cap off have you?

ok will do .

No oil cap closed and refitted . Are the tappets self adjusting on this engine ?
Another oil and filter change ?
Needs to be a cheaper oil magnatec 20/40 = £27.00 if stocked
What make of filter ?
Will check everything again tommro .

I dont see the oil and/or filter as the problem here. Something ancillary thats been disturbed is more likely.
If an oil change had made such a diference to the engine noise then I would be expecting harsh metallic sounds, roaring sounds ok just needs finding.
imo.

Had a good long listen .The noise is definitely from tappets top of engine (continuous)
and a dull thud from right hand side of engine every 1 sec. approx.
Will test/check leads & cap etc What are resistance readings in ohms ?
There is a slight misfire but that is not the cause of increase in noise.

Is there definitely the right amount of oil in it?
|
hello mss1twIs there definitely the right amount of oil in it?
Yes oil is at max on dip stick

OK wasn't meaning to patronise just thinking of things I might do!

No offence taken any advice welcome !!!

IIRC Tappets are hydraulic,(if you havent already) try reving to 2000 rpm for 30 seconds to 1 minute,if the noise dissapears you may have a weak oil pump, IMO magnatec is not the best oil to use in this engine......

Reving to 2000rpm i can feel/hear a slight miss fire and tappets are still very noisy
IMO magnatec is not the best oil to use in this engine......
What do you recommend ?
|
Have you used and engine oil flush. I am concerned that doing so may have dislodged carp and it have moved and block an oilway somewhere. Regards Peter
|
i'll tell you what i broke on this engine some time ago, it was the small rigid pipe coming from the charcoal canister iirc. i remember it being ideal to lean on when looking at back of engine. worth a look
|
I'm pretty sure the tappets on this engine are NOT hydraulic and should in theory be adjusted every 36k.
|
Loose cambelt will rattle the top end. Cant see that changing the oil would affect belt tension though but check it anyway.

Simplicate and add lightness!!

hello Slaphead do you have a workshop manual ?
1 Italian tune up later a new noise has appeared at idle
sounds like a loose exhaust . When exhaust noise is fixed will try to post some video / audio on u-tube etc .
|
How much is a dist cap/rotar and easy to fit ?
Slight mis fire at 2000rpm
|
It's a bit late now, after all this revving and Italian tuning, but I presume the oil light went out promptly when you first started it, and stays out?
