In today's DT HJ advises a correspondent re a safe small car for £2k ish.

Just to say HJ did not mention the Euro NCAP 4* '98 on Clio II, the Yaris was also given 4* rating in 2000, the Clio II is available in the £2k ish price range.

(The subs cut out my point about corrosion in the seams. NCAP tests new cars, not 9 year old rotboxes.

The correspondent wanted reliability as well.

In my experience very hard to find in an older Renault!

Our Clio II has been MUCH better than a friends two year younger Yaris, far fewer faults, we also have a local Polo of the same age that is rather rusty, no sign of corrosion on the Clio.

Getting hacked off with older renaults are unreliable thread its a load of bunkum
I have a 1994 1.4 Clio, bought it over three years ago with genuine 72,000 on the clock.
Taught both my daughters to drive in it and they love it its got chacater they say.
Relaible yes totally routine service apart from two front tyres and a wheel bearing and a radiator for the heater. This was done at my insistance as it got cold in the car in winter. It passed its MOT last week no faults,no cautions no rust and it stands outside all its live so it is not cosseted.
Friends VW polo spends more time in garage than on road recently, electrics here ingnition there, ect and its three years younger and similar mileage.
May be I was lucky but as previous posts I have put on I find older French cars as relaible as some of the so called premium marques.I am talking of mileages up to and over 150,000 by the way.

I got the latest annual car buying guide from a well known consumer magazine today - will look up owners' comments about the reliability and other related matters about French cars when I get a chance...:-)

Which magazine was that then?

A chap in the pub has bought a L reg Corsa from a dealer for £1200. It has "done" 53000 miles, but he found that the speedo doesn't work. He took it back and told the boss that he wasn't happy with the car. He has been offered a Rover 414 instead with a new head gasket fitted!!!

I have told him to steer well clear of this car, am I right?

I looked on Autotrader and found plenty of L reg Corsas for around £500. For £1200 you can get an R reg.

Some people are fools when buying cars. I've bought plenty of rubbish in the past.

All goes to show that there really is one born each minute.

Neither of these is worth more than £500 - the Rover perhaps less. Both need 12 mths MoT and to be clean in/out for that price.

this garage that gets £1200 for old scrap must either be on
park lane london
the outer hebrides
or the rock cornwall

Not sure I understand you there HJ, yes NCAP test new cars however not everyone can afford a new car so it is quite understandable that they might want to have an indication of the relative safety of a couple of 7, 8, 9 year old 2 grand cars. In that regard a 4* 2000 Clio is going to be better than, for instance, a 3* 2000 Fiesta and a corrosion free 4* 2000 Clio is going to be better than, for instance, a rusty 4* 2000 Polo.
HJ in the DT, safe small cars iro £2k ? - peterb
NCAP test brand new cars and therefore a good NCAP rating is a reasonable indicator of safety when the car is new and (probably) for a few years afterwards.

However, as the car ages other factors become important. Therefore level of corrosion, whether the car has been in an accident, how well it has been maintained are as important as the original NCAP rating.

>>as the car ages other factors become important>>

Clearly though everything else being equal a 2000 4* car is likely to be safer than a 2000 3* car etc.
