Got TomTom 710 Free with my new Seat. All set up and working fine.

With this, comes one free month of TomTom Traffic. To make this work you need to use a GPRS type phone whicjh I have (Nokia 6230)

So have went through the process and it seems to be working fine, however the little capital G on my phone is permanently showing which usually means I am connected to GPRS services.

But I know this browsing costs me.

Does it need to be permanently connected whilst using the TomTom traffic or should it only connect when you press the TT Traffic button to get an update and then disconnect again?

I am going to be driving from Glasgow to Normandy next week and this free trial might be handy, but I don't want an astronomical phone bill!

Any one already got this?

Unless you have a data deal, then it will cost you - no idea how much though.

I'm on a T-Mobile Web and walk deal that gives 'almost' unlimited data access for £7.50 per month - cheap when 1mb can be a couple of pounds on some networks. As the data updates are just 'text' it should be fairly economical, my phone does full web sites, so 1 page can be 100kb - the traffic system should be much cheaper.

Have you tried any Tom Tom forums for cost ?

The answer is "it depends".

GPRS charges if you are not on a tariff is based om data transferred. But the amount TomTom traffic uses is fairly low. I used to use it with TomTom 5 on my iPAQ but don't do so much travelling for business at present. I even used a pre-pay SIM in a separate phone and £5 lasted quite a while.

The second reason it depends is you can setup TomTom to check for traffic updates automatically, do it manually as well, or only use manual updates. And you can set the period between updates. And the data exchanged for checking for updates is fairly small unless this then triggers a lot of new traffic info to download.

When TomTom first introduced Traffic feature it downloaded info for all incidents. Now it downloads overview type info but detailed info will download when you go to look at it.

Personally I'd monitor it and if really paranoid try it out with a pay as you go SIM in a phone so you can monitor credit.

Does the TT Go 710 support the TMC aerial out of interest? If it did then one payout on the antenna means you get updates via TMC radio signals and that payout lasts forever. No more GPRS.
