Ive just been looking through some older threads and came across some unanswered questions about lpg the main one being the safety side of things
im an LPGA approved convertor so obviously its in my interest to say how safe lpg is so read for yourself at LPGA.co.uk there is a whole section on safety
Channel tunnel.. yes its true at the moment the channel tunnel do not allow gas cars to travel with them but one of my customers is currently in a court battle with them over it
channel tunnels view is that if there is a fire on the train they simply seal that carriage and deal with the fire at the other end so they dont want anything extra on the train that is flammable fair enough
but as hj said autogas tanks are much much safer than calor gas type bottles
so doesnt it seem starnge that you are allowed to carry 80l or a 40 kilo bottle of lpg with your caravan the channel tunnel dont seem to think this a risk at all?????!!!!
anyway any gas questions im quite happy to give a hopefully unbiased opinion

........and Dave fitted the lpg conversion on the trouble free prize winning* Golf GTI owned by my goodself so knows his onions.

*any reference to "prize-winning" is purely a figment of Mr Macey's over-active imagination.

Trouble-free Mr Macey (sic)? I thought it needs 500 squid spending to scrape through an MOT (according to the responsible, honest VW dealer)

Only joking, you are of course referring to the LPG conversion.

Guy - Don't worry - it's an even sadder state of affairs when one doesn't *know* one's own name, like a certain frequent contributor - the word "contributor" being used here in the loosest sense, in every sense.

It's a sad state of affairs when one can't even spell one's own name correctly!

Dave,
Is LPG more suitable for short journeys than petrol. I have been told you can't start the car up on LPG, so how soon can you switch over, i.e. does the engine have to be up to normal operating temperature to use LPG. My car is a 2.5 V6 2001 (new shape) Mondeo.

My jeep starts on petrol and switches over automatically to gas when the coolant temp at the vaporiser is 40C (the vaporiser is water heated from a tee off the heater hoses). This is within a mile at the moment from a stone cold start, and I would expect it to be less in summer when the ambient temperature is higher.

Regarding the safety of LPG, the guy I spoke to at my insurance company (DaimlerChrysler) said that they consider LPG to be a safer fuel than petrol. The tanks are made of 3mm steel and are considered safe for off-roading.

I am looking at getting a 1.8 or 2.0 Ltre golf GTI, no turbo of course, with 60- 80K on the clock. This would be a MK IV 20 V. Is there anything I should know about LPG conversions on a relatively complex multi valve engine?

I haven't seen many converted VW's, is there any reason for this?

Thanks for your help
