According to our local rag, Vauxhall is offering a minimum £1,000 trade in on an old car for a new one similar to a successful scheme introduced by the Irish government some years ago to get scrappers off the road. Apparently, it's to pre-empt anticipated government regulations to force car manufacturers to produce cars that can be recycled, so to speak. However, Ive checked the Vauxhall website and there's no mention of it. Has anyone heard of this?

I guess it makes it worthwhile to buy some £200 heap of rust on ebay if you want a new Vauxhall. It's mainly small cars, although you can get a 1.6 Zafira (underpowered?) or 1.9 diesel.

Not sure if it will actually work out cheaper than a discounted web deal though.

it's also quite dishonest I think, the bangers are unlikely to be doing large mileage, and the environment would probably be better off *not* producing a new car, and continuing to use the old, slightly less efficient model.

This is just a straightforward sales ploy by GM. Nothing at all to do with gov't regulations..

If they charge list price for the purchase, the salesman has a very large wedge of cash to play with and artificially inflate the trade-in value.

I'd much rather have best discounted price less auction trade-in value, that's a much lower cost to change!

I agree that it's a sales ploy but as it happens, my better three quarters is in love with the new Corsa and I happen to have a 13 year old Astra destined for the scrapper at the end of July which, if I play my cards right, could be used to get a grand off a new car in the process. With my GM card points (£900) added in, I'm quids in (literally) not to mention the brownie points with you know who....

Don't assume that's the best deal.

Discount dealers will give £750-2000 off a brand new UK sourced Corsa, depending on model chosen. If you add that to the £30/tonne from the scrappie you might do better elsewhere.

The cynic in me suggests that you'd get £1000 off a new Vauxhall simply by bargaining a little. Then put your scrapper on eBay.
